UCLA Rendezvous: A Guide to Study Hours, Spaces, and Snacks
Finding the perfect study spot on a sprawling campus like UCLA can be a challenge. Between crowded dorm rooms and the constant hum of campus life, focus can be elusive. This guide offers a comprehensive overview of study spaces, extended hours initiatives, and the diverse culinary landscape that fuels academic success at UCLA.
Expanding Study Options on the Hill
Recognizing the need for more accessible study areas, UCLA has launched initiatives to extend study hours and create comfortable, productive environments.
Pilot Program for Extended Hours
The undergraduate student government Academic Affairs commissioner, Divya Sharma, announced a pilot program led by the Academic Affairs Commission and UCLA Residential Life to expand study spaces starting Sunday. This quarter-long initiative was created in response to student feedback gathered at the Study Space Town Hall in November.
Addressing Overcrowding
Many students have expressed difficulty studying in their dorm rooms due to overcrowding. The extended hours program aims to provide more options for students living on the Hill. As one student noted, even common rooms and The Study at Hedrick are often packed, making it hard to find a seat. While some students express concern that simply creating more spaces on the Hill won't solve the overcrowding issue, the initiative is a step towards addressing the demand for study areas.
Key Study Spots and Dining Options
UCLA offers a diverse range of study spaces, each with its unique atmosphere and amenities. Many of these locations also provide access to food and beverages, making them convenient for long study sessions.

Jimmy's Coffee House
UCLA’s first coffee house is where campus culture and coffee collide since 1975. Taste the fresh pastries or have a light meal, try the soup and grilled cheese combo. This is one of my favorite coffee shops on campus. It’s very beautiful. This place has lots of tables and outlets along the pillars. It’s a nice place to gather and discuss homework, projects or study for any upcoming exams.
Anderson Cafe
Located just down the steps from the new Marion Anderson Hall, this location is also perfect for those attending an event at Royce Hall. It now serves Starbucks coffee and some of their most popular drinks, such as a very berry hibiscus. They also serve frozen yogurt, paninis (which rotate every day) and pastries alongside a large selection of coffees.
Lu Valle Commons
Named after James “Jimmy” Lu Valle ’36, M.A. "The people here are nice in a ‘Cheers’ sort of way. It's friendly and run by students who work hard every day. Go to study and enjoy the standard cup of coffee and muffins.”
Northern Lights Food Court - The Lighter Side
In the Northern Lights food court, there is a section called "the lighter side." Here, they offer a variety of proteins and vegetable sides. Proteins include rotisserie chicken, salmon and other fish. Sides include vegetables, carrots, mashed potatoes and rice with veggies.
Blaze Pizza
Individual pizzas made with fresh ingredients and your choice of classic flour or cauliflower crust. Cheap personal pizzas that come out hot. The specials change every day, so you never know.

Cafe Synapse
A place for the researchers and doctors of the Gonda Center and MacDonald Laboratories to connect with each other. Paninis and omelets never disappoint.
Cafe Med
Serves a wide variety of offerings such as sushi, breakfast favorites, salads and sandwiches. The breakfast quesadilla includes as many veggies as you like, egg, cheese, hash browns and salsa.
Ronald Reagan Hospital Cafeteria
Guests at the cafeteria may stop by for a delightful and aromatic cup of freshly brewed coffee or a skillfully prepared meal at any of the six meal stations including: the grill, pizza, hot entree, exhibition cooking, deli bar, and soup & salad bar.
Kerckhoff Coffeehouse
Brewed Public Domain coffee, espresso drinks, pastries and sandwiches. Highly recommend their spinach and feta tortilla wrap, which comes with feta cheese, spinach, egg white and sun dried tomatoes in a huge green tortilla. In terms of coffee, they stick to the nonfat vanilla latte.

Asian-style noodles, sushi and boba. They have some pretty good deals with their noodles and sushi combo.

Panda Express
Gourmet Chinese food, from orange chicken to spring rolls.
Epic Salads
Featuring gourmet salads and sandwiches, plant forward bowls and tasty treats!
Wetzel's Pretzels
Fresh-baked pretzels served hot! Lemonade and other drinks too.
Boba Tea House
Serving boba tea, flavored teas, iced coffee and smoothies. The servers even give me the option to adjust the sweetness level or the type of dairy they use.
Important Considerations for On-Campus Housing
It's important to note that UCLA housing is provided exclusively for residents and their authorized guests. Resident hosts are expected to be present with their guests at all times, including while dining in the restaurants. Allowing a person entrance into a building and leaving them unattended is prohibited. Residents are fully responsible for the conduct of their guests and for informing them of University rules and On-Campus Housing regulations.
