Instead, eligible high schools are asked to nominate a student in the senior class who exemplifies leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. The nomination process involves the submission of contact information, activities, awards, and two essays: a personal statement and a leadership essay. Thomas Jefferson Scholars Program (NC State University)
The Thomas Jefferson Scholars Program at NC State University is a highly competitive, dual-degree program offered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS). Established in 1986, it was the first dual-degree program at NC State and one of the first in the nation.
Admission and Program Structure
New Thomas Jefferson Scholars are admitted each year through a selection process in the Spring of their high school senior year. Academically qualified students who have been admitted to NC State, to either CALS or CHASS, will receive an invitation to apply to the program. The process includes submitting a statement of interest, followed by an invitation to a day on campus for interviews and information sessions.
All CALS and CHASS majors are available as choices for the two degrees. Students start in their admitted major in one of the colleges and declare their second degree path by the end of the second year. A faculty Mentor from each college advises each student on their curriculum, helping to plan a timely graduation.
Mentorship and Community
The program offers a small class each year for each Thomas Jefferson Scholars cohort. The faculty mentors are with the Scholars throughout their time at NC State. In addition to the academics, the program has an affiliated student organization, The Thomas Jefferson Scholars at NC State, which fosters a sense of community among the scholars. The program also includes a fall retreat, which provides an opportunity for students to connect and build friendships.

Curriculum and Requirements
In the first semester, students take ALS 495 (LEAD: Leadership, Exploration, and Development), a discussion seminar taught by the faculty Mentors. The goal is to introduce students to interdisciplinary approaches to current problems of agriculture and society. In the second year, students take a section of ANT 252 (Cultural Anthropology) just for their cohort. Third-year students take HI 481 (History of the Life Sciences), an Honors seminar taught by the CHASS Mentor.
The overlap of requirements means that the typical transcript of a successful Jefferson Scholar shows around 30 credit hours beyond the single degree. However, many students also enter with around 20 hours of AP, IB, Early College, or other transfer credits. Many Jefferson Scholars study abroad, which requires careful planning but can be done with little to no impact on time to graduation.
Dual Degree Options
The program allows students to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in conjunction with their primary major. The BA requires a World Language competency to the 201 (third semester) level, and a range of humanities and social science courses. The BS track has the same basic language competency requirement as the CALS degree, and the same communication skills requirement. The BS includes a concentration in one scientific discipline - which would be the student's CALS major.
Jefferson College of Population Health (JCPH) Scholarship Opportunities
The Jefferson College of Population Health (JCPH) offers a variety of scholarship opportunities, tuition discounts, and other financial benefits to help students afford the cost of earning their graduate degree.
General Scholarship Funding
The College is committed to keeping the cost of public health training accessible and provides a minimum of $6,500 in scholarship funding to all students admitted to the MPH program. Exceptional applicants and students enrolling in the online delivery option may receive up to $10,000 in scholarship funding. All public health applicants qualify for this scholarship except for the EDM/MPH and PhD in Nursing/MPH dual degree applicants. Applicants to the Bridge pathway (i.e., BS/MPH) do not qualify for this scholarship, but receive other benefits.
Named Scholarships
JCPH offers several named scholarships, including:
- Donato Tramuto Scholarship: Named in honor of Mr. Donato Tramuto, the former CEO of Tivity Health. This scholarship requires an application.
- Thomas Eakins Scholarship: Named in honor of Mr. Thomas Eakins, the Philadelphia native who painted the famous 1875 portrait of Dr. Samuel Gross. This scholarship requires an application.
- Dr. Joseph S. Gonnella Scholarship: As part of the partnership with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC), MD/MPH students receive a scholarship for the MPH portion of the dual degree. Eligible students automatically receive this scholarship when they are accepted into this dual degree program.
- Jefferson College of Health Professions Scholarship: As part of the partnership with the Jefferson College of Health Professions, eligible EDM/MPH students receive a scholarship. Eligible students automatically receive this scholarship when they are accepted into this dual degree program.
- Jefferson College of Nursing Scholarship: As part of the partnership with the Jefferson College of Nursing, PhD in Nursing/MPH students receive a $3,500 scholarship. Eligible students automatically receive this scholarship when they are accepted into this dual degree program.
Tuition Discounts and Fee Waivers
Full-time and part-time Jefferson (and LVHN) employees are eligible for a 15% tuition discount and a waiver of library and IT fees for approved courses and programs. Employees must identify themselves as Jefferson (and LVHN) employees on their application in order to receive the tuition discount.
The College has partnerships with a wide variety of non-profit agencies, professional associations, healthcare providers, businesses, and other organizations, to support the continuing education of their members and employees. Many of these agreements include tuition discounts, course waivers, scholarships, and other benefits. Applicants must indicate their affiliation at the time of application to receive the benefits associated with their organization.
AmeriCorps Segal Education Award Match
The MPH program is designated as a School of National Service in the AmeriCorps program. To honor the hard work and service of AmeriCorps members and alumni, students can apply for an award match to the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award when they are accepted into any MPH degree program. This match scholarship requires an application.
Graduate Assistantship Positions
The public health program offers a limited number of Graduate Assistantship positions each year. Graduate Assistants are matched with a JCPH faculty member to help with a variety of activities, including research and project management. Graduate Assistants work 10-15 hours per week and receive hourly payment.
Scholarship Policies
Scholarship awards can only be used to pay academic tuition and fees for courses taken in JCPH and cannot be used to cover the costs of on-campus or off-campus housing, transportation, textbooks, supplies, or other expenses. Tuition discounts and fee waivers are only applicable to courses and degree programs in JCPH. Scholarships, tuition discounts, fee waivers, and other benefits are non-transferrable, non-refundable, non-renewable, and must be declared at the time of admission. Scholarships are awarded based on merit, financial need, prior and current scholarship awards, academic performance, alignment with the purpose of the scholarship, and other factors. Students must remain in good academic standing, adhere to the scholarship’s requirements, and comply with all applicable college and university policies to continue receiving award disbursements.
