Taylor Stephens: A Rising Star in UCLA Tennis and Softball

Taylor Stephens is emerging as a notable name in UCLA athletics, showcasing her talents in both tennis and softball. This article delves into her contributions, highlighting her achievements and the impact she has made on the Bruins' athletic programs.

Early Success in Softball

Stephens made an early impact on the UCLA softball team, demonstrating her potential as a valuable player. In a game against CSU Bakersfield, she hit a home run off the left-field foul pole, marking the Bruins' first home run of the season. This performance earned her a spot in the starting lineup for the subsequent game against Loyola Marymount (LMU). However, she experienced discomfort after a swing and did not return to the game.

UCLA's Dominance in the NCAA Tournament

The UCLA Bruins have a rich history in the NCAA tournament, making an appearance in every tournament since 1999 and missing only one Super Regional since 2014. This extensive tournament experience was evident in their dominant victory over the UCSB Gauchos in the NCAA Regional.

In the game against UCSB, No. 9 seed UCLA (50-10, 17-5 Big Ten) routed the unranked UCSB Gauchos (34-25, 17-10 Big West) 9-1 at Easton Stadium in the NCAA Regional. The Bruins improved to 20-2 at home on the season, a record that will continue to aid them as hosts of the Los Angeles Regional. The offense started off slow, with just one collective run scored between both teams until the bottom of the fourth inning. UCSB opened scoring in the top of the second, when Delaina Ma’ae hit a single to right field, scoring Alexa Sams.

Key Moments and Contributions

Offensive Spark in the Fourth Inning

UCLA's offense finally exploded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs in a two-out rally. A hit by pitch and a Taylor Stephens single set up runners in scoring position for Kaitlyn Terry. Terry took the first pitch she saw deep to center field, her second home run of the season, to put the Bruins ahead 3-1.

Clinching the Victory

The six-run inning featured two more homers for the Bruins, extending their lead to 9-1, enough to secure the run-rule victory. Jessica Clements began the scoring, launching a three-run homer to center field. The Gauchos finally decided to switch pitchers to Ainsley Waddell, but she was equally unable to slow down the powerhouse Bruin offense. Jordan Woolery knocked in a RBI single before UCLA’s home run leader, Megan Grant, sent her 24th of the season spiraling over left center. With the blowout victory secured, Grant rounded third base with her hands to the side of her face, signaling “good night” to the Gauchos.

Kaitlyn Terry's Standout Performance

In the end, it was Terry who shone brightest for the Bruins, coming up huge offensively and on the mound. She batted 1-for-3 with the crucial lead-taking homer in the fourth, while pitching two scoreless innings. Following the triumph, the Bruins are set for a matchup against San Diego State on Saturday afternoon. A win will send the Bruins to the championship of the Regional bracket, with a chance to reach the Super Regional.

Stellar Pitching Performances

UCLA's pitching staff has been a key component of their success. Taylor Tinsley, in her first career start, pitched a no-hitter, leading No. 2 UCLA softball (4-0) to a 3-0 win over Cal State Fullerton (2-2). The team followed this with an 18-1 triumph over CSU Bakersfield (0-4) on Friday and 11-0 and 8-0 victories over Loyola Marymount (1-3) and Bakersfield, respectively, on Saturday.

Tinsley entered Saturday evening’s matchup as the No. 1 pitching recruit in her class and exited five innings later as the first Bruin freshman to throw a no-hitter in her debut since Amanda Freed in 1999. Redshirt junior utility Maya Brady, who went 6-for-6 on Saturday after going 1-for-3 the previous two days, hit a rocket toward left field that bounced off the scoreboard and set the table for UCLA’s home run party against Bakersfield.

Coach Inouye-Perez's Perspective

Coach Inouye-Perez praised Tinsley's fearless approach and ability to play the game with unwavering determination. She also highlighted the team's improved patience at the plate, noting that they were more disciplined in their approach compared to previous games.

Other Notable Players

In addition to Stephens and Tinsley, other players have made significant contributions to the team's success. Graduate student outfielder Jessica Clements recorded three hits on three at-bats, in addition to a walk, and scored three runs on the day. Sixth-year pitcher Brooke Yanez made her blue and gold debut against LMU following time spent with Oregon and UC Davis.
