Cracking the Swire Summer Internship: A Comprehensive Guide
The Swire Summer Internship Programme stands as a coveted opportunity for penultimate-year students eager to springboard into the Swire Management Programme post-graduation. This guide provides a detailed overview of the program, application requirements, and key factors that can help you stand out.
Who Should Apply?
The Swire Summer Internship Programme is designed for intellectually curious, adaptable, and business-minded penultimate year students globally, regardless of nationality. The company sponsors necessary visas and covers travel and accommodation expenses for interns assigned to work outside their hometown. Swire is looking for a diverse pool of students who are intellectually curious, business minded, driven, adaptable with the initiative and enterprise to develop into future business leaders. Inclusive and open, you’ll exhibit the Swire values of excellence, endeavour, humility, continuity and integrity.
Project Assignments and Responsibilities
Interns are entrusted with significant responsibilities from the outset. You will be given the responsibility and autonomy to plan, drive, execute and conclude your project. Hong Kong citizens will be assigned to projects within Hong Kong SAR. Similarly, Chinese Mainland citizens will be placed on projects within the Chinese Mainland, regardless of their place of study or work rights in Hong Kong.
During the eight-week internship, you’ll manage your own business project. As you come on board, you will be given a high level brief of your assigned project - say, leading a digital marketing campaign for a Swire Properties shopping mall; or reviewing and revamping Standard Operating Procedures for Cathay Pacific Cargo team. The days could involve focus group with customers, meetings with teammates and vendors, discussing direction and progress with your supervisor, burying your head in Excel spreadsheets and research material, and doing presentations to stakeholders, etc.
Support and Development
To ensure you have support throughout this experience, you will be paired with a Swire Management Programme buddy.

The Internship Culmination: The Business Pitch
To wrap up your internship, alongside a group of your fellow interns, you’ll have the opportunity to pitch a business idea to senior management. You can showcase what you learned from the internship experience and demonstrate your entrepreneurial spirit.
A Glimpse into a Typical Day
Every day can be very different! For your first day of work, a comprehensive induction experience is waiting for you. Although you’re only posted to one company/one team, we want you to have a glimpse of the wider ecosystem of Swire companies and culture. For example, if you’re posted to Swire Coca-Cola, you will still get to hear sharings from Swire Properties, Cathay Pacific and Swire Resources teams - to build your exposure and network across different industries. Each project is unique, meaningful, and exclusive to the intern. At the very end of the internship, as a team together with your fellow interns, you will come up with your own innovative business pitch, and present up close and personal to our seniors! An ultimate demonstration of your business acumen, teamwork and confidence.
Making Your Application Stand Out
Key Qualities Swire Seeks
Swire looks for candidates who have the below qualities.
For Business Acumen: business case competition experiences, entrepreneurial experiences are helpful examples. Tell us about your brilliant experiences and ideas!
For Leadership and Teamwork: definitely let us know leadership roles you have taken in extra-curricular activities - leading a club or a team; organising a volunteering trip, etc. You will be planning, driving, executing your own project in a Swire team; and you’ll be working with fellow interns to deliver a final presentation. Eager to learn: tell us your experiences where you jump out of your comfort zone and picked up new skills and adapt to new environment quickly - that’s what you’ll need to do in your internship! Adapt to a new industry and team, learn and deliver results you can be proud of, all within 7 weeks!
The Group Discussion: Collaboration is Key
In the Group Discussion exercise you will read about a business case, and then work with a few other candidates to go through business objectives, discuss options, and come up with an agreed proposal. With the business case, we want to look at your ability to quickly digest, evaluate, and analyse a business scenario, and come up with sensible solutions.
In the group setting (as opposed to solo interview) we particularly look for your ability to lead, motivate and collaborate with others. To stand out, definitely don’t think about ‘how do I beat other competitors’ - rather think about how to bring out the best in all the teammates, resolve differences, and drive great results and synergy as a team.
The Final Interview: Authenticity Matters
We’d love to get to know you as a person - and understand your career aspirations and interests. We’d also love to get to learn more about your business acumen and your personal views about Swire businesses, as well as current issues and industry trends. Be prepared to talk about your impressive experiences with solid examples. Be authentic and be yourself.
Language Requirements
Yes - the application, group discussion exercise and final interviews are all in English. In the workplace, the working languages could be a mixture of English and Chinese (Cantonese and/or Putonghua).

Strengthening Your Business Acumen
Don’t just read up on Swire - keep an eye on the world’s current affairs, macro trends and industry news! We welcome students from all academic backgrounds. If you’re not a business student, don’t worry - we don’t intend to test ‘hard business skills’ like financial ratios etc in the recruitment process. Familiarising yourself with business concepts, reading up on business magazines and news would be very helpful.
The Benefits of a Swire Summer Internship
Completing the Swire Summer Internship will help with your application for the Swire Management Programme next year. Swire is a highly diversified global corporation, whose core businesses are mainly focused in Asia. These include property, beverages and food chain, aviation, marine as well as trading and industrial activities.
Real-World Experience and Skill Development
The internship offers invaluable real-world experience and the chance to develop critical skills. The internship also offers many learning opportunities. Through activities such as “lunch and learns” and networking drinks I was able to learn not only about all of the other operating companies and industries but also meet senior people across the Swire network who were so generous in sharing their knowledge and insights with the interns. Through these events I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the Swire business functions at different levels as well as different regions! This has been an amazing chance for me to develop my self-awareness, understand my business persona and interests and begin to explore the world of work. Furthermore, the internship gave me the chance to discover a new place, collaborate with and meet many interesting people and understand the importance of connectivity in a wider business sense.
A Stepping Stone to the Swire Management Programme
Having partaken in this internship, I now aspire to join the Swire Management Programme. The opportunities including to work across so many different business disciplines and organisational functions, to work in a variety of countries, to experience new cultures, languages and ways of working is too good to miss. For any young graduate this training, development and support whilst evolving one’s personal and business skills can only be a transformational experience.
A Personal Account: The Internship Experience
I signed up for the Swire Summer Internship during my year abroad in Taiwan. I was incredibly excited when I saw there was an opportunity for me to not only participate in a fantastic and well-known internship but also to work abroad. I was incredibly fortunate to have successfully applied for the internship and to have been seconded to the digital department at Cathay Pacific. Cathay Pacific is the main airline in Hong Kong and named the world’s 5th leading airline this year.
Unique Opportunities and Projects
One advantage of being a global conglomerate is that it allows them to send their employees all over the world. Throughout the internship you are assigned 1-2 personal projects to work on in addition to a team business project with other interns. My first project involved developing and rolling out a data analytics course for all key Cathay staff to improve data literacy across the organisation. My second project involved the creation and pitching of a business proposal for a new company-wide digital innovation event in addition to their well-known Hackathon. I was delighted to learn that this was subsequently approved for 2025 and is expected to contribute to future operational improvements through the proposing of innovative solutions.
A Global Perspective and Supportive Environment
One of Swire‘s many attractions to me as a company to work for is the unique position they hold. One advantage of being a global conglomerate is that it allows them to send their employees all over the world. Being a languages student who loves to travel, this was a perfect fit - it even allowed me to work in Hong Kong over summer! One thing I most appreciated about working at Cathay Pacific was the supportive atmosphere, if you were eager to learn about other departments or company leaders’ experiences, everyone I reached out to was open to getting a coffee and sharing their experience and advice. It was exciting to work in Hong Kong, a lively metropolis and one of the world’s most famous business hubs. I was able to communicate in both English and Mandarin, as well as pick up a few Cantonese phrases. Whilst you are fully engaged during your internship, you do also have the opportunity to enjoy exploring an amazing place as well as discovering local spots, culture and traditions.
