Sharif University of Technology: Rankings, Programs, and Academic Excellence

Sharif University of Technology (SUT), known in Persian as Dāneshgāh-e San'ati-ye Sharif, stands as a premier public research university in Tehran, Iran. Founded in 1966, it has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious engineering schools in the country. This article provides a comprehensive overview of SUT, covering its rankings, academic programs, research activities, and significant contributions to science and technology.

Historical Overview and Development

Sharif University of Technology was established in 1966 under the name Aryamehr University of Technology by Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi. Initially, the university had 54 faculty members and 412 students, who were selected through a national examination. In 1980, the university was renamed Sharif University of Technology.

In 1972, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi appointed Hossein Nasr as president, aiming to model the school after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) while grounding it in Iranian culture. By that time, the university campus initially housed four departments: Electrical, Metallurgical, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemistry. Since then, SUT has expanded to include ten different departments in science and engineering. All departments offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs.

Today, SUT boasts approximately 300 full-time faculty members and 430 part-time faculty members, serving a student body of around 12,000. The university's main campus is located in the Tarasht neighborhood of Tehran, near Azadi Square and the iconic Azadi Tower. Additionally, SUT operates an International Campus on Kish Island in the Persian Gulf, established in 2005, offering bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. programs through its Faculty of Engineering and Science and Faculty of Management.

Student Political Movement

Through the student political movement after the 2nd of Khordad Movement, Sharif students were also actively involved. The major groups with political intentions at Sharif, during 1997-2003, were Basij students and the Association of Muslim students, briefly called Anjoman (Association). Most other smaller groups were allies of either Basij or Anjoman. Basij was a serious opponent of Mohammad Khatami, the president at the time. There have been several clashes between member students of the two groups. However, the major clash between Anjoman and Basij occurred while the student movement was silent in most other universities.

Notable Events

During the Mahsa Amini protests in 2022, many students participated, with video footage of the protest and subsequent response by Iranian security forces published first to social media and then by major news organizations.
