Growing up in a small town doesn’t diminish aspirations or goals. However, the high cost of college can be a significant hurdle. Fortunately, for students from rural backgrounds who dream of attending college, numerous scholarship opportunities exist.
Scholarships Targeting Rural Communities
Several scholarships specifically target students from rural communities, aiming to support their educational pursuits and encourage them to contribute to these areas after graduation.
Rural Community Scholarships
As the name suggests, these scholarships are designed for students who grew up in a rural community and intend to return to one after graduation. Even if you plan to attend college in the city, you can still apply for these opportunities. For instance, some scholarships award $5,000 to students majoring in a STEM or medical field. Eligibility requirements vary, so it's essential to review them carefully. Some scholarships may have additional requirements.
Hagan Scholarship Foundation
The Hagan Scholarship Foundation (HSF) aims to address the unmet financial needs of students by offering up to $7,500 of aid per semester. Freshmen can also receive $1,000 for essential college items and supplies.
NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association
NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association offers $2,500 scholarships to exceptional rural students for their first year of college or vocational school. Future Farmers of America (FFA)
The Future Farmers of America Organization offers numerous scholarship opportunities for students interested in agriculture or related fields. Atlantic Telephone Membership Company Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in the Atlantic Telephone Membership Company service territory in North Carolina. Scholarships are also available for individuals living in rural areas of North Carolina and South Carolina.
University-Specific Scholarships
Several universities offer scholarships specifically for students from rural backgrounds or those with specific interests.

- Virginia Es'Dorn Rigler and Robert R. Rigler Scholarship (University of Iowa): Available to first-generation college students.

- Frank and Nelli Corliss Lake Scholarship (Union College, Nebraska): Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
- Agnes M. Lindsay Trust Scholarship (Western New England University): Available to students at the university.
- Verl R. Topham Endowed Scholarship (Westminster College in Utah): Open to full-time sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are undecided about their major.
Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS)
Washington residents have access to three scholarship pathways for high-demand, living-wage careers, each with different benefits and eligibility requirements:
- Apprenticeship, associate degree, or certificate in an eligible health care, STEM, or trades program.
- Advanced Nurse Practitioner degree (MSN/DNP) with the intention to practice in a Washington state Medically Underserved Area (MUA) or Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for at least two years after program completion.
