Scholarships for Cosmetology Students: A Comprehensive Guide
Cosmetology is a dynamic and artistic field, allowing individuals to express their creativity through mastering the art and science of hair, skin, and nails. It equips students with the skills necessary for various careers in the beauty industry, such as hairstylists, barbers, estheticians, manicurists, and makeup artists. The cost of enrolling in cosmetology school typically ranges from $6,000 to $20,000, influenced by factors like location, reputation, and instructors. Fortunately, scholarships for cosmetology school can alleviate the financial burden, making beauty education more accessible to aspiring professionals.
Understanding the Landscape of Cosmetology Scholarships
Scholarships for cosmetology students are diverse, catering to different needs and backgrounds. Here’s a breakdown of the common types:
Trade School Scholarships
Many students opt for trade schools or vocational programs over traditional four-year colleges. Trade school scholarships are specifically designed to help these students cover the costs of tuition, supplies, and certification exams. Bold.org donors, for instance, create trade school scholarships to support aspiring beauty professionals.
State-Specific Scholarships
Some scholarships are exclusively available to students based on their state of residence or the location of their cosmetology school. Local organizations, businesses, and Bold.org donors often establish these scholarships to support students within their communities. Whether you're in Florida, Arkansas, or Montana, state-specific scholarships can help you complete your cosmetology program.
No-Essay Scholarships
For cosmetology students juggling coursework, internships, and part-time jobs, no-essay scholarships offer a convenient way to secure financial aid. These scholarships, often found on platforms like Bold.org, require minimal effort, typically involving a simple application.

Applying for Cosmetology Scholarships: A Step-by-Step Guide
Applying for scholarships requires careful preparation and attention to detail. Follow these steps to maximize your chances of success:
Review Requirements
Carefully read the eligibility criteria and application requirements for each scholarship. Note any specific instructions, such as essay prompts, recommendation letters, or portfolio submissions.
Prepare Your Essay
If required, write a compelling essay that highlights your passion for cosmetology, your career goals, and why you deserve the scholarship. Tailor your essay to each scholarship's prompts and guidelines, focusing on showcasing your unique qualities and experiences.
Create a Portfolio
If the scholarship application requires a portfolio showcasing your work, select a variety of your best cosmetology-related projects, such as hair styling, makeup artistry, or skincare treatments. Arrange your portfolio in a professional manner and include brief descriptions or explanations for each piece.
Prepare Other Application Materials
Gather all necessary application materials, which may include transcripts, letters of recommendation, essays, or a portfolio showcasing your work and passion for cosmetology.
Tips for Winning Cosmetology Scholarships
The competition for scholarships can be fierce. Here are some strategies to help you stand out:
Apply Early and Often
Applying for as many opportunities for financial aid as possible increases your chances of being selected. Additionally, being among the first students to apply can sometimes boost your odds.
Put Time into Your Essays
To impress donors, ensure your scholarship essays have correct grammar, are focused on the prompt, and are personal, leaving a lasting impression.
Seek Feedback
Ask a friend to review your applications. Another set of eyes can help catch mistakes or ensure your essay is clear and compelling.
Do Your Best
You won't win every scholarship you apply for, but even a single scholarship can significantly reduce the cost of your beauty education.

Northwest College School of Beauty
At Northwest College School of Beauty, we know how quickly education costs can add up! While some borrowing options like loans have to be repaid, grants and scholarships offer a unique way to fund your education in a way that you won’t have to pay back later. We strongly encourage all students to apply for scholarships and grants to help cover the cost of their education! We encourage all students to start their financial aid journey by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). Our school code for the FAFSA® is 014351 and appears on the application as Northwest College of Hair Design. You can combine your FAFSA® grants and loans with other scholarships and grants to help reduce the financial obligation of your program.
Grants
Grants are money that you do not have to repay. Grants are often need-based and may come from the federal government, state governments, your school, or a private or nonprofit organization. Do some research to discover grants you may be eligible for! We’ve created a list below, but this is not exhaustive. There may be other options available you can explore, but this list can help you get started.
- Pell Grants. This is the most common federal government student aid program. It is designed to help low-income students afford higher education. The grant is open to all college-bound students who meet minimum income requirements. The final award is based on financial need, cost of attendance, and your enrollment status.
- Oregon Barber and Hairdresser (B&H) Grant Program. This grant is open to residents of Oregon who are attending a licensed school of barbering, hair design, cosmetology, or manicure in the state. The school must participate in a Federal Title IV financial aid program and the Barbers and Hairdressers Grant Program.
- Chafee Education and Training Grant.
- ACE Grant. ACE Grants are designed to help you begin your career in cosmetology.
Navigating Financial Aid Beyond Scholarships
While scholarships are a significant source of funding, they may not cover the entire cost of your cosmetology education. Here are some additional options to consider:
Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA)
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. Northwest College School of Hair Design's FAFSA code is 014351.

Many beauty schools offer payment plans to make the remaining balance easier to manage in monthly installments.
Loans
Explore student loan options to cover any remaining costs. Remember to borrow responsibly and understand the terms and conditions of the loan.
