The average GPA was a 3.5 for our most recent first-year class. The average high school GPA (recalculated on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year) was a 3.80. This suggests that successful applicants generally have a strong academic record with a mix of A's and B's. However, it's important to note that this is just an average, and the university considers the rigor of coursework when evaluating GPA.

GPA Recalculation

Like most college admissions staffs, Salve Regina recalculates GPA on a 4.0 scale, taking only college preparatory core academic subjects into consideration. The university does not include classes like physical education, general music and art (with the exception of AP courses), and other electives. Salve Regina University offers several application deadlines and admission plans to accommodate different student preferences and circumstances.

Home-Schooled Applicants

The admissions committee reviews every homeschooled applicant carefully with the understanding that each will have followed a plan of study that is unique. For students who are attending an accredited program (virtual or in-person), please submit your transcript and school profile. This can also be done when following a prescribed curriculum within a program that does not hold a formal accreditation. For students where this is not available, please send course descriptions for all high school level coursework and a portfolio of work that includes one writing or work sample from each core subject area. We are also happy to accept supplemental materials that speak to your strength of study or other academic programs that you’ve had an opportunity to take part in. We continue to require two letters of recommendation but can be flexible on who submits them on your behalf. Please select people who are not directly related to you whenever possible.

Education Majors

Acceptance to Salve as an education major is considered provisional acceptance into the University's Department of Education. All students applying to an education program must submit scores on the SAT, ACT or Praxis Core to gain full acceptance. This is a requirement set by the Rhode Island Department of Education and recommended minimum scores are determined annually. If you don't meet the recommended minimum score, you can take up to two one-credit remedial courses to meet the requirements, providing you score a "B" or better in that course. Prospective education majors must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, earn a "C" or better in all education courses and meet the readiness for admission criteria. Once you're formally admitted to the Department of Education, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75, earn a "C" or better in all education courses and meet the specific requirements for completion of methods and prior to licensure assessment points as outlined in the assessment handbook.
