Saint Petersburg Mining University: A Legacy of Innovation and Excellence in Resource Education

Founded by the decree of Empress Catherine II in 1773, Saint Petersburg Mining University stands as the first technical higher educational institution in Russia. With a rich history spanning centuries, the university has evolved into a modern hub of education and research, boasting state-of-the-art technologies and facilities. It remains a leading institution for those aspiring to thrive in the real economy sector.

A Historical Overview

The university's origins can be traced back to the vision of Peter the Great and Mikhail Lomonosov, who recognized the need for training engineers for the burgeoning mining and metal industries. Empress Catherine the Great realized this vision on October 21, 1773, with the establishment of the Mining School. This move was driven by the understanding among Russian rulers that a strong engineering profession was vital for maintaining Russia's status as a great power.

From Mining School to National University

Throughout its history, the university has undergone several transformations in name and structure. Initially known as the Mining School (Горное училище), it was renamed the Mining Cadet Corps (Горный кадетский корпус) in 1804. In 1833, it became the Institute of the Corps of Mining Engineers (Институт корпуса горных инженеров). Since 1866, it has been known as the Mining Institute (Горный институт). The university is still widely known in Russia as Gorny, or 'Mining', referring to its previous name.

During the Soviet era, it was renamed after Georgi Plekhanov, who attended the institute in the 1870s, becoming known as the G. V. Plekhanov Leningrad State Mining Institute and Technical University. Between 1958 and 1960, a branch of the institute was opened in Vorkuta, along with night schools in Slantsy, Monchegorsk, and Kirovsk. In 2011, the university was renamed Saint Petersburg State Mining University, and after merging with the North-West Open Technical University in 2012, it was known as the National Mineral Resources University. The university has been known as its current name since 2016.

The university’s academic structure is further divided into various departments, offering education in 97 specialties. Other programs include research, student exchange, and language courses. Saint Petersburg Mining University provides education to over 12,000 students, supported by a highly competent academic staff.

International Collaboration and Projects

Saint Petersburg Mining University actively participates in international collaborations and projects. It is the initiator of several international projects, such as the Russian-UK Raw Materials Dialogue and the Russian-German Raw Materials Forum. These initiatives foster knowledge exchange and cooperation in the field of mineral resources.

The university has also resumed summer school programs, which attract participants from various countries. These programs offer intensive courses and practical training opportunities. In 2019, the university received 450 applications from 17 countries for its summer schools. These programs provide a platform for students to enhance their skills and knowledge in specific areas, such as mining-engineering documentation and equipment design.

Campus and Facilities

The university is housed in a grand neoclassicist building with a 12-column portico on the banks of the Neva River on the south shore of Vasilievsky Island. Architect Andrey Voronikhin completed the building in 1806-11. It is the first building that can be seen from ships travelling into the city from the Gulf of Finland, and is a prime example of the monumental neoclassicist style favored in Imperial Russia in the early 1800s.

Architectural and Artistic Significance

The building itself is a work of art. On the left-hand side of the steps at the entrance to the university is a sculpture by Vasily Demut-Malinovsky, who designed decorations and sculptures for many of the city’s churches, palaces, and monuments. The Abduction of Proserpina depicts how the Roman goddess Proserpina is seized and taken to the underworld by Pluto and is after the original The Rape of Proserpina by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1621-22), which provided the inspiration for many artists. On the right-hand-side of the entrance to the university is the Hercules and Antaeus sculpture by Stepan Pimenov, one of the leading Russian sculptors of the early 19th century, who also created sculptural decorations for the Kazan Cathedral, the Admiralty, and many other palaces and monuments in St Petersburg, and who had worked closely with Demut-Malinovsky since 1802.

Modern Infrastructure

The campus covers 300,000 square meters and includes a cafeteria, museum, multipurpose complex, university hotel, sports complex, courts, gym, swimming pool, recreational area, cultural center, innovation labs, and a wellness unit. The university library is a multimedia unit equipped with magazines, study material, subjective books, research guides, documents, periodicals, and repositories. Other services include Xerox facility, study rooms, e-library, databases, help desk, training rooms, tutorials, and borrowing facility.

University Church

The university also houses a church, dedicated to St. Macarius of Egypt, which first opened its doors in 1805. It was closed, along with other churches, by the Soviet government in 1918, and was used first as a cinema and then as a gym, which resulted in damage to the interior.

Student Life and Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to participate in student clubs and unions to develop their skills and personalities. The university provides a supportive environment for personal and academic growth.

Summer School Experiences

Participants in the summer school programs have praised the university for its exceptional atmosphere, quality of student life, academic environment, and top-level infrastructure. They have also highlighted the numerous partner companies and the practical training opportunities provided.

Another participant noted the lack of practical training at their home university and expressed amazement at the approach taken by Mining University.

Uniform and Discipline

Unusually for a non-military establishment, the university has a uniform worn by all staff and students. When it was first opened in the 1700s, students wore a double-breasted red uniform with a white collar and gold trimmings. The uniform was dropped for a number of years before being reintroduced in 2000 with the aim of reviving the traditions of Russia's first technical college. The uniform policy may seem restrictive, but it instills discipline and professionalism within the student body.

Research and Innovation

Saint Petersburg Mining University is committed to scientific research and innovation. One of the key achievements of the university's scientists has been the invention of techniques to drill through several miles of Antarctic ice to reach the sub-glacial Lake Vostok. Professor Nikolai Vasiliev, head of the drilling department at the university, has led the drilling efforts. Scientific research into the layers of ice that cover the lake, the possibility of new forms of microbial life existing in the lake, and a host of other areas of research connected to the lake are based at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute, the All-Russian Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean (VNIIOkeangeologia), the Institute of Geography in Moscow, the Limnological Institute in Irkutsk and the Laboratory for Glaciology and Environmental Geophysics in Grenoble, France.

The university's research ranking reflects the volume, impact, and quality of its research output. The innovation ranking is calculated based on the number of patent applications and citations received from patents.
