Purdue Basketball: Scholarship Opportunities and Program Overview

Purdue University offers a variety of avenues for student-athletes to finance their education while pursuing their basketball aspirations. This article provides an overview of the scholarship opportunities available, the John Purdue Club's role in supporting these scholarships, and the academic and athletic requirements for prospective Boilermakers.

Introduction to Purdue Basketball and Recruitment

Purdue University offers athletic scholarships for basketball, alongside need-based and academic scholarships for student-athletes. If you are interested in getting recruited by Purdue University Basketball, you should get to know more about the school, what academic programs are offered, and important members of the coaching staff - these are the people you need to connect with. It’s important you build a relationship with the coaching staff.

High school student-athletes often face a discoverability problem, making it difficult for college coaches to find and evaluate them. Having an online athletic recruiting profile can significantly increase a student-athlete's exposure and chances of being recruited. The Head Coach of Purdue University Basketball is Matt Painter - make it as easy as possible for them to learn about you as an athlete, and be able to start a conversation with you.

NCAA Eligibility and Academic Requirements

Every college-bound student-athlete must be certified academically and as an amateur by the NCAA Eligibility Center prior to competing in Division I athletics. At the beginning of your sophomore year, you should complete your registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center here. In order to be academically certified, prospects need to have all transcripts and test scores sent to the NCAA Eligibility Center. Transcripts must be sent directly from all of the high schools the prospect has attended. The NCAA Eligibility Center does NOT accept faxed transcripts or test scores. Additionally, all SAT and ACT test scores must be reported to the NCAA Eligibility Center directly from the testing agency. When registering for the SAT or ACT, prospects should input the code 9999 to make sure that the score is reported directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

The next step is to apply to Purdue University early in your senior year. You may apply online here. Applications for the following calendar year (spring, summer and fall) are available beginning Aug. 1. Nov. 1 is the application deadline to be considered for university merit-based scholarships, the Honors College and the nursing and veterinary technology programs. Feb. 1 is the priority application deadline for all other academic programs; admission to some programs may not be available after this date.

John Purdue Club: Fueling Athletic Excellence

The John Purdue Club (JPC) plays a vital role in supporting Purdue Athletics by funding scholarships and academic support for student-athletes. Established in 1958, the JPC has become a model for athletic fundraising programs across the country.

Anyone interested in the future of Boilermaker Athletics may join the John Purdue Club! Many of our donors attended Purdue, but you don’t need to be a Purdue graduate or letter-winner to show your support. Approximately 25 percent of John Purdue Club members are not Purdue alumni.

The Purdue University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is one of only a handful of NCAA institutions that operates without any state or university funding. The John Purdue Club is integral in maintaining the tradition of Purdue Athletics, because 100% of gifts given to the JPC go to paying more than $13.5 million in scholarship costs per school year. Each year, all 18 Boilermaker sports programs benefit from the generosity of the John Purdue Club. All of the gifts to the John Purdue Club support scholarships and academic support for Purdue’s student-athletes and improvements to our athletic facilities. Donations are NOT used for administrative costs. Administrative costs are paid through a separate budget, based on ticket sales and radio and television revenue.

Every gift, no matter the amount, brings us closer to meeting the total scholarship costs for dedicated Boilermaker student-athletes. The impact of your gift reaches beyond the playing field. For Purdue’s student-athletes, an education at this prestigious university - made possible only through John Purdue Club contributions - provides the opportunity to prosper beyond athletics.

John Purdue Club memberships range from the First Team level to the Brees level and are based on annual giving amounts. Benefits increase with both the level and duration of support. The nine annual giving levels can be found here alongside the benefits associated with each level. Annual memberships are active from May 1 - April 30 each year.

Members wishing to leave a permanent mark on Purdue Athletics may fully endow an athletic scholarship. When a member makes a contribution for an endowed athletic scholarship, the athletic department places the funds in an endowment account and uses a portion of the fund’s annual interest to pay for an athletic scholarship for a student-athlete. Donors may choose to endow a general athletic scholarship or one for a particular sport, major, or attribute.

John Purdue Club memberships operate according to an annual renewal deadline of April 30 in order to receive benefits for the year.
