Campus Life and Student Activities
With a campus population of approximately 3,500 students, Alfred State offers a "right-sized" environment that is neither too small to limit activities nor too big or impersonal. The college provides a vibrant campus life with a wide range of activities and organizations to cater to diverse interests.
Students have full run of four fitness centers, an indoor swimming pool, 14 residential options along with student townhouses, dining choices in several locations, plus the hub of all activity is the state-of-the-art Student Leadership Center. The Pioneers compete in Division III NCAA athletics and an amazing assortment of clubs, sports, and student organizations add to the vibrancy and energy on campus.
The Student Senate of Alfred State administers over half a million dollars in club and administrative funds through the Student Activity Fee. Student Senate supports, facilitates, and leads its clubs and organizations through an annual Leadership Retreat, weekly leadership seminars, and special projects. In addition to funding, Student Senate allows students of both Wellsville and Alfred main campus to participate in collaborative decision-making processes. The Student Senate General Assembly has voting rights on the board of trustees of the college, known as the College Council, through its College Council Representative. The Student Senate General Assembly also has a voice on the Faculty Senate with a non-voting member but has voting members on many committees including the Academic Affairs Committee.

A lot of the students participate in athletics, and "many of the students on campus are dedicated to a lot more than just their studies." "We have so many clubs and organizations on campus that flourish through all of the participation from the student body," says one student.
Athletics
The Alfred State athletic teams are called the Pioneers. The college is a member of the Division III ranks of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) for most of its sponsored sports since the 2019-20 academic year. The Pioneers also compete as a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) for football, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) for men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, and the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) for wrestling. Alfred State competes in 17 intercollegiate varsity sports. Our D-III competitors come from nearby Arkport, NY, far-away Little Rock, Arkansas, and from a hundred towns and cities in between to compete in 18 intercollegiate sports, plus recreational opportunities, and club sports. Alfred State Pioneers compete with purpose and pride.
Pioneer Stadium accommodates soccer and football, and is surrounded by an eight-lane running track.
Location and Environment
Alfred State's location in the Western New York Wilds offers jaw-dropping scenic beauty and many ways to enjoy the great outdoors. The area is so pristine and untamed that it's called the Western New York Wilds. Data analysis by Washington Post Reporter Andrew Van Dam defined the Ultimate College Town by ranking US Census Urban Areas with the largest share of college students. Urban Areas follow population-density patterns, not municipal borders and Alfred is a clear winner in this analysis as the home of both SUNY Alfred State College and private Alfred University. Winning the number one national ranking and earning the nickname College Town USA proves that Alfred's picture-perfect environment away from big city worries stands out among all other university and college towns in the country. Van Dam called Alfred “the collegiest” a term he coined. While located in a scenic rural area, Alfred is within an easy day's drive for people across the US Northeast.

Alfred State participates in the START-UP NY program, a groundbreaking initiative that gives companies the opportunity to operate state and local tax-free on or near the college campus for 10 years.
