Merit Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

Northern Kentucky University awards more than one million dollars in academic scholarships each year to incoming freshmen. The scholarship process is very competitive, and awards are based on academic credentials submitted during the admissions process. Merit scholarships are typically awarded for eight consecutive fall and spring semesters of full-time undergraduate work, provided the student maintains eligibility.

Scholarships for Continuing Students

Northern Kentucky University awards several academic scholarships each year to continuing students. The process is very competitive. Note*: The scholarships listed below are for current, degree-seeking NKU students only.

Haile Scholarship Program

The Haile Scholarship program was created from a $15 million gift by The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr. Foundation to the College of Business in 2008. Both Carol and Ralph felt strongly that education was the key to ensuring quality of life and their foundation supports those education initiatives that bring change. Their gift has created opportunities to provide scholarships to outstanding students from the freshman to senior levels.

  • Eligibility: Freshman to Senior standing.
  • Majors Eligible: All B.S.B.A.
  • Award Amount: In-state, full-time tuition for Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Renewal: Yes, automatically renewed if you continue to meet all eligibility criteria.
  • Additional Requirement: Junior standing (must have completed 60 credit hours, of which 30 hours must have been completed at NKU).

Other Scholarships for Continuing Students

Several other scholarships are available for continuing students with varying eligibility requirements:

  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Freshman to Senior standing.
    • Sophomore standing (must have completed 30 credit hours).
    • Sophomore standing (must have completed 30 credit hours, but less than 60).

Scholarships for International Students

Ted and Mary Weiss International Student Endowed Scholarship

The “Ted and Mary Weiss International Student Endowed Scholarship” is an annual award for international students. The purpose is to recognize outstanding leadership and contributions to the integration of international students and international awareness at NKU. International Student & Scholar Services will convene a committee to select 2 recipients.

  • Axol Bioscience Scholarship: Axol Bioscience is inviting applications for a science scholarship for graduate or undergraduate degree programs. The degree program/research area must be in a life science field with a ‘wet-lab’ component (bench-based research such as molecular or cell biology). Selection is based 50% on academic achievement and 50% on the article submitted.
  • Buildium's Build U. Buildium’s Build U.
  • Progressive Automations Engineering Scholarship: Progressive Automations gives away $1,000 in scholarships to two (2) engineering students each year.

Specific Scholarship Programs

  • EVA G. Scholarship:
    • Eligibility: Must be accepted for admission as a degree-seeking student at Northern Kentucky University and enrolled in a study abroad program through the NKU Office of Education Abroad. Must have attained the minimum equivalent credit hours of a second year undergraduate degree student in any College of Informatics bachelor’s degree programs. Award recipients will have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and no prior international travel experience at the time of scholarship application.
  • L.I.F.E. Scholarship:
    • Eligibility: Must be accepted for admission as a degree-seeking student at Northern Kentucky University. Incoming students must have a high school GPA of at least 3.75 and a composite ACT score (or equivalent) of at least 29. Continuing students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 and a recommendation from a professor in the sciences. Must be pursuing a declared major in Computer Science or Data Science with a second major or minor in the life sciences. Applicants must declare their intent to pursue a Ph.D.
    • Requirement: Maintain a cumulative NKU GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • WILLIAM H. Scholarship

Tuition Model

In fall 2025, NKU launched its 3 States, 1 Rate tuition model for new undergraduate students from Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. The tri-state tuition model is not available for students enrolled in our accelerated online academic programs, many of which come with our Path to Success Scholarship. Current NKU students who are residents of Ohio and Indiana will retain their current tuition and institutional scholarships/discount pricing model, subject to any applicable approved tuition rate increases.
