Managing Classes and Students
Teachers can add students to their Newsela classes. To get started, select the option that your school uses.
Adding Students to Classes
Class Codes through Newsela
- Go to Settings by clicking on your initials in the upper right-hand corner.
- Click the Class Directory.
- Select the class you’d like to add students to.
- Click on the Students tab.
- Click the blue Invite Students button on the right-hand side.
There are two options:
- Class Link: Copy the URL and share it with your students. Once students click on the URL, Newsela will guide them to sign in or create an account, and then take them to the class.
- Class Code: Students sign in on newsela.com. They will click their name in the upper right-hand corner. Under the classes section of their account page, have students enter the Class Code and click "Add a Class."
To confirm that students have joined the class, go to the Class Directory. Under each class name, you’ll see a list of students who have joined the class.
Syncing Classes from Google Classroom
If you have classes and students set up in Google Classroom, you can import those classes and rosters into Newsela.
- Go to Settings by clicking on your initials in the upper right-hand corner.
- Click the Class Directory.
- Click Sync from Google.
- Select the classes you want to import, choose a grade level and subject for each, then click Import Selected Classes.
You may need to wait for the sync to complete. To confirm that your students are in your class, go to your Students tab in the Class Directory. Under each class name, you’ll see a list of students in the class. The student roster in Newsela should correspond to the student roster in Google Classroom.
Imported students will see your class on their settings page.
Syncing Classes with Clever
- In Newsela, go to your Class directory by clicking your initials in the upper right-hand corner, clicking Settings, and selecting the Class Directory from the left-hand menu.
- Click Sync with Clever.
- Select the classes you want to import, choose a grade level and subject for each, then click Sync classes.
You may need to wait for the sync to complete. To confirm that your students are in your class, go to your Student directory. Under each class name, you’ll see a list of students in the class. The student roster in Newsela should correspond to the student roster in Clever.
Imported students will see your class on their settings page. Note: If your school is using Bulk-Rostering with Clever, classes will automatically sync to Newsela from Clever on a nightly basis. Please reach out to your Clever admin with any changes needed to your classes or rosters.
Syncing Canvas Classes in Newsela
- In Newsela, go to your Class directory by clicking your initials in the upper right-hand corner, clicking Settings, and selecting the Class Directory from the left-hand menu.
- From the Class directory, click Sync with Canvas to choose the classes to import from Canvas into Newsela.
- From the pop up menu, choose the courses you would like to sync with Newsela and click ‘Sync Selected Classes’.
Do not sync Canvas PD courses with Newsela. Syncing courses in which teachers are enrolled as students will restrict access to features and content. After the initial sync, class rosters will sync automatically when you log in through Canvas.
Syncing Classes with ClassLink
- In Newsela, go to your Class directory by clicking your initials in the upper right-hand corner, clicking Settings, and selecting the Class Directory from the left-hand menu.
- Click Sync with ClassLink.
- Select the classes you want to import, choose a grade level and subject for each, then click Sync classes.
You may need to wait for the sync to complete. To confirm that your students are in your class, go to your Student directory. Under each class name, you’ll see a list of students in the class. The student roster in Newsela should correspond to the student roster in ClassLink.
Imported students will see your class on their settings page. Note: If you're logging in through ClassLink and do not see the 'Sync' button, your classes are automatically syncing from ClassLink on a nightly basis. Please reach out to your ClassLink admin for any changes needed to your classes or rosters.
Accessing Newsela through Schoology
Students should follow these steps to access your classroom in Newsela:
- Log into Schoology.
- In Schoology, open your class.
- At the bottom of the left hand sidebar, click on Newsela. Newsela will open in a new window.
Once you have clicked on the Newsela icon in Schoology, you will be added to your classroom roster in Newsela.
To view your students in your Schoology classes in Newsela, follow these steps:
From your Newsela homepage, go to your Student directory by clicking your initials in the upper right-hand corner, clicking Settings, and selecting the Student Directory from the left-hand menu. You’ll see a list of your students.
Students who are missing from the roster will be added once they log into Newsela from your Schoology course.
Your students will need to access Newsela through all Schoology courses that they will need access to in Newsela.
Managing Students
On the Students tab, teachers will see lists of the students in each of their classes.
- Add Students: The way that you add students to classes depends on the option you used to create the class.
- Remove Students: Click on the student's name, and then select classes. You can then remove the student by selecting the X on the right side of the line with the classroom name.
- Missing Students: If students names are missing from your student list, they are not yet enrolled in your Newsela class. If you manually built your classes in Newsela, missing students need to enter the class code on their settings page.
Newsela Writing
Starting July 2025, Newsela Writing is offered for purchase as an Add-on to a premium subscription. Teachers and students will need Newsela accounts in order to use Newsela Writing.
