Celebrating Excellence: The History and Significance of National Student-Athlete Day
National Student-Athlete Day, observed annually on April 6th, is a day dedicated to honoring student-athletes who excel both in academics and athletics. These individuals are often seen as pillars within their schools and communities, serving as role models due to their ability to achieve success in both the classroom and their respective sports. As the saying goes, "the grind never stops!" for a dedicated student-athlete.
The Origins of National Student-Athlete Day
Founded in 1987 by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), now known as the Institute for Sport & Social Justice, National Student-Athlete Day was established to recognize high school and college student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in their activities and make significant contributions to their schools and communities.
The day has garnered support from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who are actively involved in community service are eligible to receive a National Student-Athlete Day Award Certificate. Since its inception, over 4.4 million student-athletes have been honored with certificates.
Defining the Student-Athlete
A student-athlete is a full-time student who participates in organized competitive sports, either individually or as part of a team, under the sponsorship of their school. These athletes often receive scholarships to colleges and universities based on their athletic and academic achievements. There are approximately 8 million student-athletes in the United States, with over 500,000 pursuing higher education at universities. Some of these individuals even go on to play professionally.
The Giant Steps Awards
Each year, the Institute for Sport & Social Justice presents the Giant Steps Awards in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day to student-athletes and coaches who have demonstrated courage, overcome adversity, and served as activists in their communities through sports. The National Consortium for Academics and Sports developed the Giant Steps Awards in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day for “student-athletes, professional athletes, athletics administrators, civic leaders, coaches, parents, organizations, and other individuals who exemplify the ideals of balancing academics, athletics, life pursuits, and giving back to the community through the spirit of athletics.”

Acknowledge their dedication and ambition, as balancing school, practice, and a healthy social life can be challenging and stressful. Show your support by checking in on them regularly to ensure they are taking care of themselves.
School Celebrations
College and university Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs) often organize programs for National Student-Athlete Day. These may include community outreach activities such as visiting patients at local hospitals or speaking to elementary and middle school students about the importance of education.

Community Engagement
Since 2013, the Athletes for Hope team has collaborated with student-athletes to educate, connect, and recognize their efforts in communities across the US. What started with a few teams from the University of Virginia (UVA) has grown to more than ten university campuses and thousands of student-athletes collaborating to strengthen and support community partners. Athletes for Hope has been educating student-athletes from UVA to LSU, Southern University, Tulane, Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, UCLA, Georgetown and Howard University.
Social Media Engagement
Engage on social media to highlight student-athlete-driven activities, advocate on their behalf, and feature student-athletes, community partners, and their work.
The Importance of Recognition
National Student-Athlete Day serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing the achievements and contributions of student-athletes. To be recognized, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be involved in some form of community outreach or service. Both the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations have aligned themselves with this day. The NCAA’s involvement began in 1994.
Student-Athletes During Challenging Times
Even during challenging times, such as a global pandemic, student-athletes have demonstrated resilience, patience, and perseverance. They continue to dedicate their time and effort to serving their communities.
