Philadelphia Education Fund: Empowering Students and Shaping the Future of STEM Education
The Philadelphia Education Fund (PEF) plays a vital role in supporting students and educators in Philadelphia, particularly in the realm of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. Through initiatives like the McKinney Center for STEM Education and programs such as Ignite STEM, PEF strives to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed in the 21st-century workforce and beyond.
Organizational Overview and Financial Information
The Philadelphia Education Fund files various forms to maintain transparency and accountability. These filings, available from 2011-2018 fiscal years (and potentially including older records), include Form 990, Form 990-EZ, and Form 990PF. These documents provide valuable insights into the organization's financials, including officer information, tax schedules, and other relevant data. This information is accessible through platforms like ProPublica, offering raw filing data and Exempt Organization profiles with organization names and addresses. Form 990 documents are also available as XML files, providing machine-readable data for electronically filed documents. Audits are conducted to ensure financial integrity.
McKinney Center for STEM Education
The McKinney Center for STEM Education, an integral initiative within the Philadelphia Education Fund, is dedicated to ensuring that all Philadelphia students graduate high school with robust STEM knowledge and skills. The Center envisions a future where students are well-prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving workforce and society. In collaboration with Compass Pro Bono, the McKinney Center is actively assessing the evolving needs of Philadelphia’s STEM community through anonymous surveys. This proactive approach allows the Center to adapt its programs and initiatives to best serve the students and educators in the region.
Ignite STEM: Experiential STEM Learning
Ignite STEM, a project-based, out-of-school-time program offered by PEF, provides students with hands-on STEM learning experiences combined with financial literacy workshops, professional development sessions, and college & career exposure initiatives. In a recent fall session, 30 students from eight area schools participated in activities ranging from LEGO engineering and bread-making experiments to exploring STEM in sports and visiting Princeton Engineering. The program culminates in a "STEMonstration" event where students showcase their projects and learning to family, educators, PEF staff, Board members, and community partners. The program is supported by partners like First Citizens Community Bank, demonstrating the collaborative effort to promote STEM education in Philadelphia.
Engaging Students Through Creative Expression: I AM PHL Contest and Student Summit
In celebration of Philadelphia's 250th anniversary, PEF launched the I AM PHL Contest and Student Summit, inviting high school students to represent their city through original visual art, music, and spoken word. This initiative provides a platform for young voices to be heard and celebrated, fostering a sense of civic engagement and creative expression.
