Navigating Your Internship in Dublin

Location

Most of Dublin’s internship opportunities will be based in the center of Dublin, in Districts 1, 2, 7, and 8. There may also be opportunities on the outskirts of Dublin depending on what type of company you would like to intern for.

Accommodation

Rent per month for your apartment in Dublin will depend on where you decide to live. In general, the average per month is about €700. However, this can also go up to as much as €1100 if you live in a particularly desirable part of Dublin.

Visa Requirements

In order to intern in Ireland, you will need a Short Term Employment visa. Your employer in Ireland will need to sponsor you in order to apply for the visa. You will also need an employment, contract, letter from your employer, and proof of medical insurance for your trip in Ireland. It is possible that your visa officer may ask for evidence of qualifications and previous work experience in the area you are working in. US and EU passport holders will not need a visa to intern in Dublin.

Cost of Living

In general, there is not a huge difference in the cost of living in the suburbs or in major city in Ireland. Rent for a one bedroom apartment per month is about 600€, and go up on depending on size and furnishings.

Etiquette and Networking

People in Dublin are generally very warm and friendly, and this comes through in the way they conduct their business and personal lives. Firm handshakes and smiling is considered the general greeting. Eye contact when talking to someone is considered trustworthy and important for meetings; make sure you shake hands with everyone in a meeting and smile to show that you are open and friendly as well. Since business is relaxed, meetings quickly become casual and first names are used very soon after meeting.

Since your co-workers in Dublin will be friendly, relationships grow quickly and networking is easy. Networking is one way to build lasting relationships in Ireland. Most networking occurs after work at dinners or by going out for a drink. Going out to dinner or to the pub with your co-workers is a way to help build connections. Swapping business cards is a common practice, and it helps to carry them with you wherever you go.

Workplace Rights

Ireland has created specific workplace rights for interns. These include the right to protection from excessive working hours, adequate breaks, public holidays, protection from sexual and other types of harassment or discrimination, data protection, fair procedure, and join a union. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has worked hard to establish the rights of interns in the workplace. While interning in Dublin, you will be protected under basic employment rights.

Language

English-speakers will have no problem in Dublin. Business is almost always conducted in English in Dublin.

IES Abroad

IES will do the legwork as far as finding you an internship, but you might wish to do so research ahead of time about workplace culture, employment trends, etc. The most current information can be found on the IES Dublin Internship webpage. If the field you are interested in is not listed here, that does not mean it isn't available.

In Dublin, you will live in University College Dublin's student residences. You will live in a single bedroom with your own private bathroom. You share a common area with three to five students, which includes a fully-equipped kitchen. The residence halls are completely furnished and have WiFi Internet access. Participants will make their own travel arrangements to Dublin, taking advantage of frequent-flyer options and/or internet specials available to them. The cost of travel is not included in the program fee. Information about airport pick up will be provided directly to the participants by IES.

AIFS Abroad

AIFS Abroad offers credit bearing courses to complement your semester or summer internship, with credits issued through Fairfield University, our school of record located in the US. Some universities require credit to be earned, and we cannot change a university’s requirement. AIFS Abroad offers visa processing services to applicants who enroll into the program by this date. Participants can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS Abroad programs that includes a round-trip flight from 25 U.S gateways and airport transfers to and from campus.

In addition to day trips and excursions, a cultural calendar of weekly activities and social events is included in your program fee. These activities will include both typical tourist sites and attractions and lesser known visits which take advantage of the expert knowledge of our local AIFS Abroad staff and give you a more authentic and insightful view of life in Ireland.

Notre Dame Irish Internship Program

These fully-funded internships and research positions place students in prestigious organizations across the full spectrum of Irish life, embracing the community sector, entrepreneurship, research laboratories, engineering, politics, business, education, social justice, STEM, sport, poetry, architecture, theater and Irish culture. Funding for the Irish Internship Program is generously provided by benefactors of the Notre Dame Ireland Advisory Board, corporate and academic partners.

Students can apply to up to three Dublin or Galway-based internships on the Irish Internship Program. In addition to full-time work or research experience and Cultural Enrichment programming, interns undertake an innovative weekly Professional Development Seminar, in which distinguished figures from Irish public life engage with our interns on how best to incorporate their work and living experience in Dublin into their career trajectory. Each week a panel of professionals join us at Notre Dame Dublin for a conversation about their careers; the paths they chose, the life lessons they learned, how to find careers that match values, and how they became leaders making a difference in the world.

University of Pittsburgh International Internship Program (IIP)

The International Internship Program (IIP) gives you a competitive advantage through the experience of a summer-long, full-time internship abroad. Full - time means anywhere from 35 to 40 hours a week, so you will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to your organization as well as develop professional relationships with your coworkers. This program will challenge you to become globally competent and add value to a company from day one. The IIP is an 8-week summer program, and you'll be enrolled in a 6 credit internship for credit course.

You will be housed in shared, apartment-style housing at the University College Dublin, south of Dublin's city center. Commuting is part of living in a big city, and you can expect an hour commute from your housing to your internship site. You will earn six credits through the IIP International Internship course (BUS 1910). This asynchronous course will include reflective essays, weekly discussion boards, and a final internship supervisor evaluation. Pitt's partner in Dublin, EUSA, will work with you after your acceptance to find you an internship.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for most internship programs, students typically need to meet certain criteria, such as:

18 years of age
In good standing at their home school
A GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale (GPAs under 2.5 may be considered on a case-by-case basis)
At least sophomore standing prior to application; rising junior status at time of program departure.
Students must have successfully completed three semesters of coursework at Pitt or a transfer university as a degree-seeking student.

Preparing Your Application

Part of the application process is submitting a cover letter and resume. The Pomerantz Career Center at the University of Iowa offers assistance with writing resumes and cover letters. One of the most difficult parts of the application is writing a cover letter without a job description.
