Howard University Transfer Scholarships: Requirements and Opportunities

Applying to Howard University as a Transfer Student

Prospective transfer students can apply online through the Transfer Admissions portal. The university generally requires applicants to submit transcripts, test scores (if required), recommendation letters, and a completed application. A passing grade of C or better in both a college-level English and college-level math course is mandatory. A minimum of 15 credits is required for transfer, with 30 credits specifically for the School of Business.

Transfer Scholarship Program

Howard University offers a Transfer Scholarship Program to support incoming transfer students. Allocations for Transfer scholarships may change every year. This means funding may not be available every year for new transfer students.

Financial Aid Options at Howard University

Howard University provides a range of financial aid options, including merit-based scholarships, need-based aid, and specialized funding opportunities. Scholarships, grants, and fellowship funds are forms of financial aid you do not have to pay back. These types of aid are available from various organizations such as; Senators, Delegates, the federal government, community groups, departments, Howard University, etc.

To be considered for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Deadlines for submitting the FAFSA information and other requirements vary, so be sure to read any information provided in detail if you are a domestic student. The International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) is a form that is used to determine need-based eligibility for institutional aid.

Howard University Freshman Scholarships (HUFS)

HOWARD UNIVERSITY FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIPS (HUFS) are available to incoming First Time in College Students (FTICs). The HUFS award criteria for incoming freshmen may change every year. No internal application is needed. Eligibility for merit-based awards is determined based on students' SAT/ACT scores/high school GPAs that are entered into our system by the Office of Admissions. Eligibility for need-based HUFS awards is determined based on a range of students’ Student Aid Index (SAI). FAFSA is required for domestic students. To be considered for federal and state scholarships and grants, you will need to complete a FAFSA every year. Each state's FAFSA deadline may vary.

Federal Aid Programs

Howard University participates in several federal aid programs to assist students in financing their education:

Direct Subsidized Loans: Available to undergraduate students with financial need.
Direct Unsubsidized Loans: Available to undergraduate and graduate students; there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need.
Direct Parent PLUS Loan: Available to the parent of a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least halftime in an eligible degree program.
Direct Graduate PLUS Loan: Available to graduate or professional students enrolled at least halftime in an eligible degree program.

Students that are ineligible for Federal Direct Loans or need additional funds beyond their qualification for federal student aid may apply for a private/alternative loan.

Work-Study Program

The Federal Work Study program provides special opportunities for students to work on-campus with the goal of financially support the student. Off-campus employment information is also available. Work Study is based on financial need; therefore, not all students may qualify.

Summer Aid Opportunities

While limited, there are several options Howard University provides students for summer aid. If contacting our office to inquire about summer awarding, please note the following: You must have a valid 2025-2026 FAFSA on file. You must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for federal loans and Pell grant. Students who are Pell grant eligible will receive awards automatically. Summer courses will NOT count towards your HUFS requirements. All students with any remaining loan eligibility in 2025-2026 will need to complete a Federal Direct Loan Adjustment Form.
