The 1983-84 season stands as a watershed moment for the Heidelberg men's basketball program. Under the astute leadership of Coach John Hill, the team achieved a single-season record of 24 wins against just seven losses. Their performance in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) was equally impressive, with a 10-3 record.
Although they finished one game behind Capital University, the eventual OAC Regular Season Champion, the Student Princes demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the OAC Tournament, ultimately securing runner-up honors. This achievement earned them a coveted spot in the NCAA Tournament, placing them among the top 32 teams in the nation.
NCAA Tournament Run: Upset and Heartbreak
The NCAA Tournament saw Heidelberg travel to Greencastle, Indiana, for the opening round of the Great Lakes Regional. In a stunning upset, they triumphed over the No. 1 ranked and undefeated Hope College with a score of 73-69. The regular season was filled with remarkable achievements, including a then-record 20 wins. Among these victories were notable triumphs over formidable opponents, including a 74-70 win against the defending Division II National Champion Wright State University and a 71-70 victory over the defending Division III National Champion Wabash College. Individual players also left their mark on the record books. Harris established a single-game record with nine blocks against Marietta College and five dunks against Kenyon College. He also set a single-season record with a remarkable 80 blocks. Buccilla also etched his name in the record books with a single-season record of 197 assists.
