A New Chapter in Baseball History: The Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic
The echoes of baseball legends and the vibrant spirit of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are set to converge at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The inaugural Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic promises to be a landmark event, blending the rich history of the iconic ballpark with the dynamic culture of HBCU athletics. This event marks the first time two HBCUs will compete in a baseball game at Wrigley Field, the storied home of the Chicago Cubs.
A Historic Venue
Wrigley Field is synonymous with baseball history, but this spring, the "Friendly Confines" are adding a new chapter to its legacy. Wrigley Field holds deep ties to the rich history of African Americans in baseball. It was on these very grounds that Jackie Robinson played during his rookie season. When Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947, he played at Wrigley Field during his rookie season. More significantly, Wrigley Field is the only ballpark where Jackie Robinson played that still stands today. The ballpark also has ties to the Negro Leagues, having hosted games during the era of segregation. Even in the 1920s, trailblazer Fritz Pollard coached the Hammond Pros at Wrigley Field.
The Inaugural Matchup: Prairie View A&M vs. Alabama A&M
On May 2, the Prairie View A&M Panthers and Alabama A&M Bulldogs will take the field for the first-ever Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic. This is a sanctioned Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game played under the lights following the conclusion of a Chicago Cubs afternoon contest versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. Unlike a ceremonial showcase, this is a real Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup, with both teams bringing their competitive edge and passionate fan bases to the iconic field.
Prairie View A&M’s lineup features versatile hitters capable of manufacturing runs and creating pressure on opposing defenses. The Panthers have built a reputation around aggressive baserunning, offensive pressure, and athleticism across the field. Meanwhile, Alabama A&M arrives with its own competitive spirit, having emphasized growth and challenging non-conference schedules to prepare for the rigors of SWAC play.
A Celebration of HBCU Culture
Beyond the on-field action, game day will showcase the rich traditions of HBCU culture. Fans can expect spirited marching band performances, interactive fan activations, and a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the pride and legacy of HBCUs. The Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic mirrors the energy and cultural visibility long associated with HBCU football classics, bringing that same celebratory stage to the diamond at Wrigley Field. The Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic is reminiscent of the football classic system; these football classic events bring together HBCU teams to play in different neutral field venues around the country. The classics serve as cultural touchstones for the city and region that they are hosted in and often feature other events in celebration of HBCU life. Popular classics, such as the Magic City Classic featuring Alabama State and Alabama A&M, have served as economic boons for the areas that they play in and also feature pivotal moments that can define the course of the season.

More Than Just a Game
For Alabama A&M, the opportunity to play inside a historic Major League stadium represents more than just another game on the schedule. Access matters. Young athletes in Chicago will see HBCU uniforms inside a Major League stadium. They will see that baseball still connects to Black college campuses. As young athletes in Chicago witness HBCU uniforms take the field at Wrigley Field, they will see that the path to the professional level is still connected to Black college campuses. The Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic represents a significant moment for the HBCU community, bridging the historic legacy of Wrigley Field, the vibrant culture of HBCU athletics, and the ongoing pursuit of greater representation and opportunity in the sport of baseball.
A Historic Milestone
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the significance of the event, stating that the game is a milestone for the city and the future of the sport. He noted that the event honors the history of African-Americans in baseball while aiming to inspire young people in higher education and leadership. “The first-ever HBCU game at Wrigley Field is a historic milestone for Chicago and for the future of baseball," said Johnson. "Wrigley Field is the only ballpark where Jackie Robinson played that still stands today, making it a powerful place to write the next chapter of Black baseball history. This event honors the legacy of African Americans in the sport while inspiring young people across our city to see themselves in baseball, in higher education, and in leadership.”
Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts characterized the upcoming Classic as a historic event for the franchise. "We're proud to welcome the HBCU Baseball Classic to Wrigley Field and highlight the cultural richness HBCUs bring to the sport," Ricketts said.
Expanding Opportunity and Inspiring the Future
"Our mission is to elevate the next generation of talent and expand opportunity in Black baseball," said Earnest Horton, CEO of Black Baseball Media and organizer of the Classic. In the days leading up to the game, organizers will host youth baseball clinics, educational programming, and community-centered events at partner locations throughout Chicago.
The Broader Context: Black Representation in Baseball
Black representation in Major League Baseball has declined significantly since the 1970s. The choice of venue carries historical weight, as Wrigley Field is the only remaining ballpark where Jackie Robinson played during his career. This connection links the era of MLB integration to the modern landscape of Black collegiate sports. When Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, his games at Wrigley Field drew record-breaking, racially diverse crowds that impacted the city’s civil rights history.
