Grace Christian University: A History of Faith and Education
Grace Christian University (GCU) is a private Christian university located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Its history is rooted in a commitment to biblical principles and a desire to equip students for service in the church and the world. From its humble beginnings as an evening Bible institute to its current status as a comprehensive university, Grace Christian University has undergone significant transformations while remaining true to its core values.
Origins and Early Development (1939-1961)
Grace Christian University traces its origins back to 1939 when Charles F. Baker, pastor of Fundamental Bible Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, established an evening Bible institute. This initiative was part of the broader late 19th-century Bible college movement, which aimed to provide accessible theological training to laypeople. The institute primarily focused on training Sunday School teachers and church members of the Fundamental Bible Church.
In 1945, the program expanded into a full-fledged day school known as Milwaukee Bible Institute. John C. O’Hair, a teacher of Mid-Acts dispensationalism, played a key role in this expansion. The curriculum was broadened in 1953, and the institution was renamed Milwaukee Bible College.
Relocation and Growth as Grace Bible College (1961-2017)
A significant turning point in the institution's history occurred in 1961 when it moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Wyoming, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids. This relocation marked a new chapter, and the college was renamed Grace Bible College.
Under the leadership of successive presidents, including Jack T. Dean, Samuel Vinton, Jr., and Bruce Kemper, Grace Bible College experienced considerable growth and development. In 1967, the college achieved accreditation from the Association of American Biblical Colleges (now the Association of Biblical Higher Education), signifying its commitment to academic excellence.

The institution expanded its degree programs to meet the evolving needs of students and the broader Christian community. The State of Michigan granted the college the authority to award Associate and Bachelor of Religious Education degrees, as well as a five-year degree for vocational ministers.
Transformation into Grace Christian University (2017-Present)
In 2017, Grace Bible College underwent another significant transformation, officially changing its name to Grace Christian University. This decision, unanimously approved by the Board of Directors, reflected the institution's broader educational mission and its commitment to offering a wide range of academic programs.
Today, Grace Christian University offers a variety of degrees both on campus and online, with each degree integrating a biblical focus through required Bible credits.
