Navigating GPA Requirements at East Carolina University: A Comprehensive Guide
East Carolina University (ECU) welcomes a large number of first-year students each year, offering a transformative college experience. Understanding the GPA requirements and academic policies is crucial for both prospective and current students to ensure a successful academic journey. This guide provides a detailed overview of ECU's GPA policies, including academic standing, readmission procedures, transfer credit evaluations, and admission criteria for various programs.
Understanding GPA and Academic Standing
Maintaining a satisfactory GPA is essential for staying in good academic standing at ECU. The university has specific policies regarding academic warning, probation, and suspension based on a student's cumulative GPA.
Academic Warning and Probation
If a student's cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, they are placed on academic warning. During the semester on warning, if the cumulative GPA remains below 2.0, the student is then placed on probation.
Continuing Enrollment During Probation
Students on probation have an opportunity to improve their academic standing. If a student earns at least a 2.5 term GPA during the semester they are on probation, they will be allowed to continue attending ECU and will not be required to serve a suspension. However, students attending one or more summer terms will be held to the same academic standards as during a fall and spring term. Summer academic terms (summer I, summer II and the 11-week term) are considered one academic term when calculating a student’s academic standing at the conclusion of the summer terms.
Suspension and Readmission
If a student is suspended from ECU, they must serve a one-semester dismissal. To return to ECU after suspension, students must reapply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and complete a readmission application.

Summer School and Suspension: If a student's spring term grades result in a suspension, they may attend summer school to attempt to avoid the suspension. If you are suspended after a spring term, you may enroll in the following summer terms without completing a readmission application.
Appealing a Suspension
Students who wish to appeal their suspension must submit a written appeal to the Student Academic Appellate Committee (SAAC). The SAAC typically only approves appeals based on extreme personal, medical, or psychological reasons that were unforeseeable and uncontrollable, and only if the student provides evidence that the situation has been remedied.
Transferring Credits to ECU
Many students transfer to ECU from other institutions, and understanding how credits transfer is a vital part of the decision-making process.
General Transfer Credit Policies
During the time a student is suspended, they may attend a regionally accredited institution and transfer credits back to ECU. If a student attends another university during suspension, they must have a 2.0 GPA on all transferable credit to be eligible to apply for re-admission to ECU.
Evaluation of Credits
ECU grants course credit for CLEP, DANTES, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate exams.

Students with Foreign Credit: All official documents must be in English. Students must provide an evaluation of official documents from an accredited agency. All credits received from a foreign institution will be transferred as departmental electives unless course descriptions are provided.
Admission Requirements for Freshmen and Transfer Students
ECU considers several factors when evaluating applications from freshmen and transfer students.
Freshman Criteria
Freshman criteria includes an evaluation of all high school coursework, test scores, as well as college coursework. For the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 terms, students with a weighted high school GPA less than 2.8 are required to submit a standardized test score (ACT or SAT).
Transfer Criteria
Transfer criteria includes an evaluation of all college coursework; however, high school transcripts may still be required.
Standardized Testing
ECU has indicated that the SAT or ACT is required for some applicants. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1060, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1220. The average ACT score at ECU is 22, with the 25th percentile at 19 and the 75th percentile at 25.

ECU superscores the SAT, meaning they will take the highest section score from all test dates and combine them to form a Superscore. While the exact ACT policy is not available, it is likely that ECU does not superscore the ACT.
GPA and Acceptance Rate
The acceptance rate at ECU is 89.2%, indicating that it is lightly selective. The average GPA at ECU is 3.28, suggesting that ECU accepts below-average students, making it OK to be a B-average student with some A's mixed in.
Specific Program Requirements
Certain programs at ECU have specific GPA requirements and admission criteria that applicants must meet.
Honors College
To be eligible for the Honors College, students must submit their completed ECU application by October 15, 2025 (transcripts and/or test scores must be received by this date as well). The Honors College at East Carolina University accepts 10 transfer students into the college each year as Centennial Fellows.
MSOT Program
The Occupational Therapy programs requires a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited four-year institution. ANY undergraduate degree is acceptable.
Prerequisites: All prerequisite courses must be completed with, at minimum, a B- (2.7) prior to starting the program. The exception is the medical terminology course requirement, which can be completed by passing an exam, but the exam must be completed before the start of the first semester with a passing grade. You must complete 5 of 8 required prerequisite courses by the application deadline, with 4 credits of Anatomy & Physiology with Lab counted as 1 of those 5 courses.
MS-STH Degree Program
The MS-STH degree program is open to students with baccalaureate degrees in any discipline from institutions accredited by a CHEA-recognized institutional accrediting agency who present evidence of their ability to pursue graduate study. An Undergraduate GPA of 2.7 is required for regular admission. Applicants who have a GPA below 2.7 should contact the office to speak with an advisor regarding possible admissions routes.
Additional Considerations
Residency Determination
The Residency Determination Service (RDS) has been established by the North Carolina State Legislature as the centralized service for determining residency for students. If you’ve already completed the residency verification process and obtained your Residency Certification Number (RCN), you can enter your RCN when filling out the application.
Professional Licensure
ECU cannot confirm whether a particular program meets requirements for professional licensure outside of the State of North Carolina. Applicants should contact applicable licensure boards in any state they may want to pursue licensure prior to beginning the academic program in order to determine whether the program meets licensure requirements.
Application Deadlines
Apply to ECU no later than February 13, 2026. The application requirements for the Admissions Cycle 2026-2027 are currently being updated and will be finalized by the first Monthly Information Session on April 10th, 2026.
