Georgia Southern University: Understanding Admission Requirements and GPA Expectations

Gaining admission to Georgia Southern University requires careful consideration of several factors, including GPA, standardized test scores, and application materials. This article provides a comprehensive overview of Georgia Southern's admission requirements, with a particular focus on GPA expectations.

Acceptance Rate and Overall Selectivity

Georgia Southern's acceptance rate is 87.9%, indicating that the university is lightly selective. This means that a significant percentage of applicants are admitted. However, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The university also considers coursework difficulty, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.

GPA Requirements: What You Need to Know

The average GPA at Georgia Southern is 3.44 which requires you to be around average in your high school class. To be a competitive applicant, you'll need a mix of A's and B's, and very few C's. Taking harder courses like AP or IB classes can compensate for a lower GPA.

Here's a breakdown of GPA ranges for admitted students:

  • 3.75+: 28%
  • 3.50-3.74: 23%
  • 3.25-3.49: 20%
  • 3.00-3.24: 15%
  • 2.50-2.99: 12%
  • 2.00-2.49: 2%
  • Below 2.00: Not available

Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT

Georgia Southern requires either SAT or ACT scores for admission for Fall 2026. While many schools claim not to have an SAT score cutoff, there is often a hidden expectation.

SAT

The 25th percentile SAT score is 970, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1140.

Georgia Southern utilizes "superscoring," meaning the university will consider your highest section scores from all test dates and combine them to form your Superscore, even if the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000. This allows you to take the SAT multiple times and submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. If your SAT superscore is currently below 970, it is recommended that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time.

ACT

The average ACT score at Georgia Southern is 20. The 25th percentile ACT score is 18, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 23.

When sending ACT scores to colleges, you have control over which tests you send. You could take multiple tests and only send your highest score. To aim for the school's ACT requirement of 18 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT.

SAT Essay/ACT Writing Section

Georgia Southern considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration.

Additional Application Requirements

Every school requires an application with the bare essentials - high school transcript and GPA, application form, and other core information. Many schools also require SAT and ACT scores, as well as letters of recommendation, application essays, and interviews.

Application Deadlines

The regular application deadline is May 1. To be considered for the Honors College and other scholarships, apply by November 1st for the 1906 Full-Tuition Scholarship and February 1st for the Honors College and other scholarships.

Honors College Admission

For Honors College admission, you must have at least a 3.5 GPA and a 1200 SAT (Math and Critical Reading) or a 27 ACT.

What if You Don't Meet the Initial Requirements?

If the application materials you submitted do not meet one or more of the minimum requirements set by the University System of Georgia and/or Georgia Southern University, there are still options.

The University System of Georgia requires minimum scores of 480 on the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing test and 440 on the math test (redesigned exam). The University System of Georgia requires minimum scores of 17 in English and 17 in math.

Here are some alternative pathways:

  1. Complete Additional Coursework: You can attend another accredited college or university and complete at least 30 transferable semester hours of regular college credit (or 45 transferable quarter hours) with a satisfactory cumulative GPA to qualify for transfer admission. Remedial, learning support, and college prep make-up courses do not count as transferable hours.
  2. Bobcat to Eagle (B2E) Program: For students interested in attending classes in Statesboro, consider East Georgia State College’s Statesboro Campus. Students are eligible to use many of the Georgia Southern resources and some classes take place on our campus. Seamless processes for transfer have been developed after completing 30 or more transferable credit hours.
  3. Appeals Process: All students have the right to appeal their admission decision. If you do not meet admission requirements but can provide evidence you can be successful at Georgia Southern, you can request your file be re-reviewed with additional information (i.e. recommendation letters or an explanation of special circumstances). Contact your Admissions Counselor to discuss your situation before beginning the appeal process and then complete the Appeals Form.

Transfer Students

Georgia Southern offers regular, conditional, and first-year transfer admission. If you’ve earned fewer than 30 credit hours, you can apply as a first-year transfer student. For a transfer student, Georgia Southern will consider your institutional GPA only for admittance.

Preferred Admit Form for Graduate Studies

The Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies (JNACOGS) offers a streamlined admission option for several master’s programs. Currently enrolled undergraduate students aspiring to complete a master’s degree in their current or related area of study who meet a cumulative GPA requirement set by each program can qualify for this admissions pathway.

Georgia Southern undergraduate students who meet the criteria outlined by the participating programs must complete the Preferred Admit Form prior or during their final semester of undergraduate coursework. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee admission. All admission decisions are subject to program availability and capacity constraints.

Participating programs determine the minimum GPA required for admission to their specific program. The minimum GPA is currently a 3.0, however, some programs require a higher minimum GPA for qualification. The Preferred Admit Form does not require test scores, letters of recommendation, or essay components.
