Everytown for Gun Safety: Internship and Fellowship Opportunities

Everytown for Gun Safety and its associated groups, including Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, are at the forefront of the gun violence prevention movement in the United States. With a network of millions of supporters, Everytown works to change how Americans perceive gun violence and advocates for common-sense gun safety measures through various avenues, including legislative action, corporate engagement, and community outreach. To support these efforts, Everytown offers several internship and fellowship programs designed to engage students, professionals, and survivors of gun violence.

Internship Opportunities

Everytown for Gun Safety offers various internship programs, providing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to contribute to different aspects of the organization's mission. These internships are designed to provide hands-on experience and skill development in areas such as development, communications, and research.

Development Team Internship

The Development Team at Everytown leads the organization's major donor fundraising program. The Development Team Intern position provides support to the Development Team by conducting prospect research and updating the database. The intern reports to the Senior Development Associate and works closely with other members of the Development Team and the Office of the President.

Communications Internship

The Communications Internship is geared towards undergraduate and graduate students with strong communication, writing, organizational, and project management skills. An interest in gun violence prevention issues is essential. Bilingual candidates, especially those fluent in both English and Spanish, may be preferred.

Responsibilities of the Communications Intern include:

Tracking media coverage
Developing media lists
Tracking incoming press requests
Sending daily clips reports
Assisting the team in its day-to-day operations

The intern will focus on supporting the communications team with multiple campaigns, including long-term projects and writing tasks. This internship is offered in Washington, DC, or New York, NY, with a hybrid work schedule.

Research Internship

The Research Internship is open to undergraduate students with strong communication, writing, and judgment skills. Preference is given to applicants with experience in basic data analysis on social datasets and an interest in disability justice.

Responsibilities of the Research Intern include contributing to research on various types of gun violence, its impact, and how it affects different communities and populations. This internship is offered either in-person in New York, NY, or as a remote role.

Survivor Fellowship Program

Recognizing the power of lived experiences, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund launched the Survivor Fellowship Program in 2015. This one-year volunteer advocacy training program is designed for individuals affected by gun violence who are interested in sharing their stories with community groups, elected officials, and the media to raise awareness and motivate action to end gun violence.

Eligibility and Application

The Everytown Survivor Fellowship Program is exclusively open to individuals who have been personally impacted by gun violence of any kind, including those who have witnessed an act of gun violence, been threatened or wounded with a gun, or had someone they know or care for wounded or killed with a gun. Any individual 18 years or older who identifies as having a personal experience with gun violence is welcome to apply.

Everytown welcomes a diverse group of volunteers with all kinds of lived experiences and political beliefs. The Fellowship Program accepts applications once per year, and the application is open for one month.

Responsibilities of Survivor Fellows

During their one-year tenure, Survivor Fellows act as leaders in both the Everytown Survivor Network and their state and/or local Moms Demand Action Chapter. They are expected to find, share, and report out on five story-sharing engagements over the course of the calendar year. A story-sharing engagement is defined as an instance where a Survivor or Student Survivor Fellow shares their story with the purpose of engaging the audience in the fight to end gun violence as a messenger of the Everytown Survivor Network.

Skills and Qualities for Success

Priority will be given to those who have demonstrated a commitment to proactively identifying opportunities to share their story and are interested in further developing their public speaking and communication skills. Successful Fellows typically have prior experience sharing their story with family and friends or speaking to local organizations, are comfortable taking the initiative to approach organizations and share their story with different audiences, and have a plan to sustain their emotional health and well-being, including an existing network of support.

Support and Well-being

Everytown is committed to creating a community of support for survivors. While many survivors describe connecting with other survivors and their advocacy work as emotionally healing, the organization does not offer direct services such as counseling, financial support, or legal assistance.
