Graduate Program Structure and Requirements

The Graduate School at Eastern Michigan University offers a wide variety of programs, ranging from professional and practical to purely academic. The university is confident that prospective students can find a program that fits their needs.

A program of study (POS) is required for students in all degree and certificate programs. The POS must list at least the same number of credit hours as required by the program’s description in the Graduate Catalog. The Graduate School can provide waivers for students in those programs that have lowered the number of required hours since the student was admitted.

Minimum Credit Hour Requirements:

Doctoral Programs: Must require a minimum of 15 total credit hours of research and research support coursework.
Ph.D. Degree: Requires a minimum of 90 credit hours post-bachelor’s degree, or 60 credit hours post-master's. For programs admitting students with a specialist’s degree, a minimum of 36 credit hours post-specialist’s is required.
Doctoral Degrees (Clinical or Practitioner Programs): Must require a minimum of 75 hours if admitting students post-bachelor’s degree, or a minimum of 38 hours post-master's degree.
Specialist Degree: Requires a minimum of 32 credit hours post-master's degree.
Master's Degree: Requires a minimum of 30 credit hours.
Graduate Certificate: Requires a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Each curriculum leading to a combined bachelor's and master's degree requires students to complete the total number of credits required for the relevant bachelor's degree (minimum 120 hours) and at least an additional number of unique graduate credit hours equal to a minimum of 50% of the total required for the relevant master's degree (minimum of 15), rather than undergraduate courses credited toward a graduate degree. Students may substitute graduate courses for required elective courses in an undergraduate degree program and subsequently count those courses in an undergraduate degree program and subsequently count those courses toward a graduate program. It must include an undergraduate major of at least 30 hours and must satisfy all undergraduate degree requirements, including General Education. (Please note: the requirement of an undergraduate minor is waived for combined bachelor’s -master's program students.)

Students must ensure that all courses on their program of study meet the Time Limitation for degree completion and Residency Requirements. Any changes to the program of study that depart from the required courses listed in the Graduate Catalog must have the signed approval of the Department Head/School Director of that Program. Students who fail to obtain a program of study approved by their advisor assume full responsibility for their registrations and for satisfying University, Graduate School, and departmental program requirements. An approved program of study must be on file in the Office of Records and Registration, 303 Pierce Hall, allowing the office to complete a degree audit once a student applies for graduation. Students should schedule an appointment with their academic/graduate advisor to set up a program of study as soon as possible within their first semester.

Program Delivery Methods

Eastern Michigan University offers a variety of program delivery methods to accommodate different student needs and preferences:

In-Person/Face-to-Face: Coursework is primarily offered in-person, which facilitates the transferal of courses to Eastern Michigan University, from all 28 community colleges in Michigan.
Online: Programs can be completed entirely online, with coursework delivered synchronously or asynchronously, depending on the program. Students may be required to participate in in-person clinical or internships near their residences or attend an on-campus program on one or two weekends during a semester.
Hybrid: Combines in-person and online learning.
Hyflex: Courses are simultaneously taught on campus/in-person and online synchronously. Sometimes, a course may be delivered entirely online, either synchronous or asynchronous. Before starting the program or at the start of each semester, students may need to specify their attendance preference, whether entirely online or in-person. According to regulations, international students studying in the United States can only take one online course per semester.
