SUNY Cortland: A Legacy of Academics, Athletics, and Campus Life

The State University of New York at Cortland (SUNY Cortland), also known as C-State, or Cortland State, stands as a public university with a rich history and a vibrant campus life. Located in Cortland, New York, between Syracuse and Binghamton, the university has evolved from its origins as a normal school to a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of academic programs and fostering a strong sense of community.

Historical Overview

SUNY Cortland's story began in 1868 with the establishment of the Cortland Normal School. Among its earliest students was inventor and industrialist Elmer A. In 1941, the institution transitioned into a four-year college, becoming the "Cortland State Teachers College," authorized to grant bachelor's degrees. Further solidifying its place in the state's higher education landscape, Cortland became a founding member of the State University of New York in 1948.

Campus and Facilities

The college's main campus encompasses 191 acres (770,000 m2) and features a mix of 30 traditional and modern buildings. A significant portion of the campus is dedicated to student housing, with fourteen residence halls accommodating approximately 3,000 students.

Beyond the main campus, SUNY Cortland's commitment to experiential learning is exemplified by its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake. Within this center lies Camp Pine Knot, later known as the Huntington Memorial Camp, a site designated as a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior in 2004. Camp Pine Knot holds the distinction of being the first Great Camp of the Adirondacks and the birthplace of the Adirondack style of architecture.

Academics

Today, SUNY Cortland offers a diverse array of academic programs across its three divisions: Arts and Sciences, Education, and Professional Studies. Approximately 6,800 students are currently pursuing degrees within these divisions.

The university also offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in History. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in museums, archives, social work, library science, public history, business, law, or government service. The curriculum involves enthusiastic exchanges in small classes. Students will write a comprehensive written examination based on course work and mastery of the content and historical literature in their area of concentration, or a combination of their area of concentration and a secondary field. Especially for those intending to pursue a Ph.D.

SUNY Cortland aims for a diverse and academically strong student body. The deadline for spring semester applications is December.

Athletics

The Cortland Red Dragons represent SUNY Cortland in intercollegiate athletics. As a member of NCAA Division III, the college primarily competes in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). SUNY Cortland has consistently maintained a highly successful men's and women's intercollegiate athletics program in New York over the past two decades.

Since 1995, SUNY Cortland has consistently ranked among the Top 25 NCAA Division III programs in the Sears Directors' Cup (now the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup). In the 2015-16 competition, Cortland placed 12th out of approximately 440 schools.

Cortaca Jug

One of the most celebrated rivalries in Division III college football is the annual match-up between the Cortland Red Dragons and the Ithaca College Bombers for the Cortaca Jug. Added in 1959 to an already competitive relationship, the game was dubbed the "biggest little game in the nation" by Sports Illustrated in 1991. As of November 2016, the Red Dragons held a seven-game winning streak but lost in 2017 with a score of 48-20. In addition to the football game, the schools' radio stations, Ithaca's WICB and Cortland's WSUC, compete in the Cortaca Mic game every Friday before the Cortaca Jug game.
