Navigating Columbia University's Morningside Campus: An Alumni Guide to Access Policies

Columbia University's Morningside campus, a historic and vibrant hub of academic activity, welcomes alumni visitors. Understanding the current campus access policies is essential for a smooth and enjoyable visit. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the access procedures, registration processes, and available resources for alumni.

Evolving Campus Access: A Dynamic System

Columbia University employs a dynamic campus access system designed to ensure the safety and continuity of its academic mission. The system, which evolved from a previous color-coded model, clarifies access based on current circumstances. The campus access status level is determined by evaluating the potential for disruption to academic activities and campus operations. This level can be adjusted based on information from law enforcement and other sources regarding potential events affecting the university. The current access level is "I" - ID Only, signifying that the campus is open to active affiliate Columbia University ID (CUID) holders and approved guests only.

Alumni Access to the Morningside Campus: Registration is Key

Alumni visiting the Morningside campus can now register for same-day access through the online campus registration portal, which requires a UNI and password. It's advisable to confirm login credentials before planning a visit. If you don't know your UNI or password, instructions are available from the Columbia Alumni Center to help you recover them. Multifactor authentication (MFA) is also required for registration, adding an extra layer of security to your account. Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) provides directions for alumni on setting up MFA for the first time or on a new device.

It is important to note that Morningside campus access registration is not available to graduates of Barnard College, Teachers College, and Jewish Theological Seminary.

Same-Day Access Registration

Alumni of Columbia’s 17 schools may register themselves for campus access but are not able to register guests at this time.

Advanced & Group Registration

For advanced-registration of guests and groups, pre-registration is required via the registration form. To assist with pre-registration, TC has designated campus access approvers from the Division of Community & Student Affairs, who will review advanced guest registration requests for the Columbia campus. Last-minute requests for advanced and group registrations will not be honored. Please plan guest access accordingly.

Access to Libraries and E-Resources

Alumni retain access to Columbia's extensive library resources, both physical and digital. Once on campus, alumni can use their Community CUID to access libraries. Alumni also have access to a selection of Libraries e-resources, which only require an active UNI. Access to e-resources does not require a Community CUID.

Community CUID

If you prefer to receive your Community CUID sooner and you have Morningside campus access, you can schedule an appointment and fill out your application in person. You will receive your Community CUID the day of your appointment.

Borrowing Privileges

Borrowing privileges for onsite and offsite collections can be purchased in the Library Information Office for $30 per month. Graduates of Columbia University, Barnard, Teachers College, and Union Theological Seminary have off-campus access to the following e-resources. Please use the links on this page for access.

Understanding the University Network ID (UNI)

The University Network ID (UNI) is a unique identifier assigned to each University student, faculty, researcher, or administrator, consisting of your initials and arbitrary numbers.

Guest Access Policy for Teachers College Community

Columbia University has instituted a new, streamlined guest access process to allow members of the Teachers College community to register guests for access to the Morningside Campus. Students can now register two (2) guests per day and faculty/staff members can register up to five (5) guests per day.

Same Day Guest Registration

Members of the TC community can complete this registration form to register their guests. QR codes can only be scanned once for valid entry to campus. If the same guest needs to come to campus on multiple days, a separate registration submission and QR code is needed for each day. View the Columbia University Campus Access web page for the latest submission deadlines and additional information.

Important Reminders

All community members and visitors accessing Columbia’s Morningside campus are required to adhere to the University rules and policies, and we thank you for your cooperation.

Temporary Changes to Access (Example)

It's important to stay informed about any temporary changes to campus access policies. For example, due to the volume of campus activities and to ensure the safety of our community and continuity of our academic mission and other campus activities, the following temporary changes were in place for guest and alumni access October 6-7, 2025. Same-day guest registration was suspended beginning at 12:00 PM on Monday, October 6 (today). No members of the Columbia community were able to register same-day guests after this time period.
