CLEP Exams in Florida: Requirements and Opportunities

Many institutions, including Florida International University (FIU), recognize CLEP exams for credit and advanced standing.
What is CLEP?

CLEP Benefits and Recognition
Approximately 2,900 colleges and universities across the United States, including FIU, grant credit and/or advanced standing based on CLEP exam scores. This widespread acceptance makes CLEP a valuable tool for students seeking to accelerate their degree progress.
CLEP Exam Availability and Cost
CLEP exams are offered regularly throughout the semester. The total cost of an exam at FIU is $150, which includes a $97 fee payable to CLEP and a $53 fee payable to FIU.
Free CLEP Exams for the Military Community
The Center for Testing and Career Certification, as a DANTES Test Center, provides free CLEP exams to eligible military service members, spouses, and Air Force civilian employees. This initiative helps the military community achieve their educational goals without financial burden. To qualify for DANTES funding, test takers must be eligible.

Who Can Benefit from CLEP?

Restrictions on Taking CLEP Exams
To maintain the integrity of the CLEP program, certain individuals are prohibited from taking CLEP exams. This includes anyone involved in:
- Developing or delivering courses, workshops, or tutoring activities (public or private, paid or volunteer) that prepare candidates for CLEP exams or similar exams.
- CLEP-related instruction, preparation, or test administration activities at the high school level.
Furthermore, anyone who takes a CLEP exam is restricted from participating in CLEP-related activities, such as instruction, preparation, or administration, for at least one year following the exam date.
Taking the CLEP Exam
You must register for the exam and pay the fee to CLEP. Then you need to schedule an appointment at a testing center. On the day of the exam, be sure to bring a valid photo ID. After taking the exam, your score will be available immediately. You can then send your score to the college or university of your choice.
