Unlocking Oxford: A Guide to the Clarendon Scholarship

The Clarendon Fund is a prestigious graduate scholarship scheme at the University of Oxford, offering over 200 new scholarships each year. These scholarships are a gateway for academically outstanding students from all corners of the globe to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees at Oxford. Clarendon Scholarships are competitive, prestigious and highly sought-after.

What the Clarendon Scholarship Offers

Like all fully-funded Oxford scholarships, Clarendon covers course fees in full and provides a generous grant for living expenses. For full-time scholars, this grant is normally sufficient to cover the living costs of a single student living in Oxford. The grant was at least £18,622 for 2023-24. Scholars on a part-time course will receive a study support grant, to assist with non-fee costs.

Eligibility and Application

Candidates applying to start a new graduate course at Oxford are eligible. All degree-bearing courses at graduate level in any subject are eligible. There are no restrictions on nationality, ordinary residence or field of study. The scheme was expanded in 2012 to include students from the UK and EU, therefore providing funding for all fee statuses. Clarendon scholarships are open to applicants from all over the world, including all Arab countries, and all full-time and part-time D.Phil.

By applying for graduate study at Oxford University you will automatically be considered for a Clarendon Scholarship. You do not need to submit any additional documents specifically for the Clarendon Scholarships and there is no separate scholarship application form. Apply for a graduate course at the University of Oxford through the Graduate Application Portal by the relevant course deadline. Apply to your course by the December or January deadline, whichever is relevant to your course, to be considered for a Clarendon scholarship.

Selection Criteria

Clarendon Scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit and potential to graduate students from all around the world. Your application to your course will be considered by the academics working in your proposed field of study. The department will make the final decision on your graduate place and will notify you with an outcome.

Scholarship Duration

Clarendon scholarships are normally offered for a scholar’s period of fee liability. This is the period for which you are liable to pay course fees to the University. The fee liability page explains this in full, and also gives information about charges that may be applied after this period, known as continuation charges, which are not covered by the Clarendon Fund. At the discretion of the academic divisions, some scholarships cover an additional period of study beyond the duration of fee liability. Only a grant for living expenses is paid during that additional period.

Community and Resources

Clarendon Scholars join a vibrant, international community with access to Oxford’s world-class resources, facilities, and networks. In 2010-11, there were 297 Clarendon scholars at Oxford from 46 different nations.

Funding Confirmation

During April, May and sometimes into June, Clarendon Partnership Awards are matched to scholars depending on the award requirements. Once each scholar’s unique funding package is confirmed, they will receive the funding breakdown letter (aka a ‘CB2’) outlining the funding arrangements. A few late nominations may take place during the summer period if nominated students withdraw.

A Word from the University

“The Clarendon Scholarships open doors to Oxford for the brightest minds worldwide,” said a University spokesperson. The Clarendon Fund is currently seeking applications from eligible candidates all over the world for scholarships to pursue degree-bearing graduate courses for 2012/13 entry at the University of Oxford.
