In 1918, California Christian College was incorporated.

The Panther Emerges: A Mascot is Born

Chapman first started using a panther mascot in the 1920s, when it was known as California Christian College. The first incarnation of Pete the Panther was a papier-mâché film prop from Hollywood. According to the Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special Collections and Archives, a student snagged a leftover prop from a silent film production. The 1925 film is unfortunately lost to time.

However, the original panther was lost in 1934 during the Los Angeles flood that struck on New Year's Day. City storm drains overflowed with rainwater and mud.

Panther Tracks: The Mascot's Absence and Return

For the next few decades, there was no physical mascot at Chapman. However, the panther continued to appear on athletic programs, yearbooks, cartoons, and most notably, in the title of the student newspaper, The Panther.

In the 1990s, a panther mascot once again started appearing at athletics events on campus.

Pete the Panther: A Modern Makeover

A brand-new Pete the Panther was introduced in 2006, sporting the university’s iconic athletics logo.

In 2022, the Chapman Family voted on a new look for Pete, which was made an official part of the Chapman brand. The beloved mascot debuted his new look on the field this season. However, it’s not the first time Pete the Panther has had a makeover.

Today, Pete continues to shine as Chapman University’s biggest fan, cheering on students as they succeed not just on the field, but in classrooms, labs, and beyond.

In 1954, Chapman College moved south from Los Angeles to Orange County.
