Navigating Boise State University Admissions: Understanding GPA Requirements
Boise State University, Idaho’s metropolitan research university located in Boise, the state’s capital, has become a hub of government, business, the arts, recreation, healthcare, industry, and technology. As the largest university in Idaho, Boise State offers studies in nearly 200 fields of interest and is committed to providing education, information, guidance, and support for prospective students. Understanding the GPA requirements is a critical step in the application process.
Key Factors in Boise State Admissions
When considering your admissions chances at Boise State University, there are three critical numbers to keep in mind: GPA, and acceptance rate. While Boise State is not highly selective, with an acceptance rate of 87.2%, understanding the GPA requirements will increase your chances of getting in.
The average GPA at Boise State University is 3.44, which means you'll need a mix of A's and B's, with very few C's, to be around average in your high school class.
GPA Requirements for High School Students
Boise State Admissions uses your cumulative, unweighted high school GPA when considering you for admission. For current high school seniors attending a high school accredited by an accrediting association recognized by Boise State, you will be considered for admission based on your cumulative unweighted high school GPA. Test scores are not required and will not be used in the admission review process.
Your GPA will be calculated using a 4.0 (unweighted) scale if the weight of your GPA is unclear, and/or when your coursework is across two or more high school transcripts. The Admissions GPA calculation may not follow your high school’s grading scale/system and will include +/- grades, except when the grade is above a 4.0.

Here's a breakdown of how different GPA ranges are considered:
- 2.80 - 2.99 GPA: Highly considered for admission.
- 2.60 - 2.79 GPA: Your application will receive a more holistic review after you have submitted a high school 7th-semester transcript and a personal statement. You will receive an admission decision in early March, provided the following materials are received by Boise State Admissions by February 15.
- 0.00 - 2.59 GPA: You do not qualify for admission to Boise State University.
Holistic Review for GPAs Between 2.60 and 2.79
If your GPA falls within the 2.60 - 2.79 range, your application will undergo a more holistic review. As part of this review, you'll need to submit a high school 7th-semester transcript and a personal statement. The personal statement prompt asks you to describe, in 500 words or less, any significant academic challenges you have faced and the steps you’ve taken to overcome them. You should also mention any specific goals or aspirations you have for your Boise State education. Information about your life outside of the classroom is also helpful to include.
While not required, applicants in this GPA range are encouraged to submit up to two letters of recommendation along with a personal statement and 7th semester transcript.
Options if You Don't Initially Qualify
Boise State University has a large number of extremely qualified candidates for admission and limits its admission offers to students. If your application has gone through an extensive review and your admission decision is based on your academic coursework to date and you were not admitted, there are options to attend Boise State in the future. Nondegree students can apply for degree-seeking status once they meet Boise State’s regular admission requirements -OR- once they have completed 14 Boise State credits after high school with a GPA of 2.25 or higher. The credits you have earned will apply toward your degree.

If you have work in progress and your grades improve you can send us an official transcript upon completion of your work and we will determine if your eligibility has changed. If we receive updated academic information prior to the semester you originally applied for we will automatically re-evaluate our admission decision.
You can also appeal the decision. Appeals are reviewed by a Special Admissions Committee comprised of campus faculty and professionals within the field of advising and academic support. The committee reviews each comprehensive petition packet to determine if extenuating circumstances prevented you from meeting admission standards. They want to see that obstacles have been removed and that you will now have the ability to succeed at Boise State.
To petition your admission decision, submit the Petition Form linked in this section with required supporting documents. In the 3 questions on the form, please include your personal statement of circumstances and address your potential for success at Boise State. You are also required to submit a minimum of 2 academic letters of reference. If you have work in progress and your grades improve you can send us an official transcript upon completion of your work and we will determine if your eligibility has changed. In addition, you can re-take any applicable tests (such as the ACT or SAT) to improve your scores. If we receive updated academic information prior to the deadline of the semester you originally applied for, we will automatically re-evaluate our admission decision.
GPA Requirements for Transfer Students
If you have earned at least 14 transferable credits and have a cumulative 2.25 GPA or higher, you will be admitted with regular admission. The submission of official college transcripts is required. University policy only allows for 70 credits of transfer work from a community college to be used for graduation.
If you attended Boise State University in the past and then attended another college or university after Boise State University, you are required to meet our transfer admission standards.

GPA for Honors College Admission
For current Boise State students or incoming transfer students applying to the Honors College, it is recommended to have an unweighted cumulative 3.25 college GPA or higher. Having a 3.25+ GPA does not automatically guarantee admission or a scholarship from the Honors College, but having a lower GPA does not automatically disqualify you for admission either. The application cycle for spring admission runs from August 1- December 15, and decisions are typically made within 3-4 weeks of receiving the application. However, the turnaround time begins only once you have submitted your honors application materials AND you are admitted to Boise State.
Additional Factors in Admission
Keep in mind that your admission decision relies not only on your GPA but also on your coursework difficulty, extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.
Maintaining Good Academic Standing
To remain in good academic standing, you must maintain a minimum grade-point average (GPA) for the number of credits you have earned. If you fail to maintain the minimum Boise State GPA shown in the provided table, you are placed on probation. If you leave the university while on probation, you will remain on probation when you return-even if you have attended another institution in the meantime. While on probation, you may be ineligible to receive financial aid or to participate in extracurricular activities sponsored by the university.
If you are dismissed from the university, you are barred from enrolling for one semester (fall or spring) after the first dismissal and for one academic year after any subsequent dismissal. If you wish to appeal this waiting period, you must file an appeal with the University Academic Appeals Committee. The Academic Appeals Form is available from the Registrar’s Office. You will be permitted no more than two reinstatements.
