This underscores the importance of a well-rounded application that highlights academic excellence, relevant experience, and a genuine passion for the field.
Academic Expectations: GPA and Prerequisite Courses
A strong academic record is a cornerstone of a successful optometry school application. Having a strong overall GPA and science GPA can help improve your chances of acceptance to optometry school. The average GPA for accepted optometry students typically falls within the range of 3.5-3.6. However, it's important to remember that optometry school GPA requirements may vary from program to program.
Beyond the overall GPA, specific prerequisite courses are essential. All optometry schools have prerequisite courses for admission. Optometry schools require a variety of prerequisite courses, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, and anatomy and physiology. These courses ensure that students have a solid foundation in the basic sciences necessary for understanding the complexities of the visual system.

The Optometry Admissions Test (OAT) is a standardized test required by 23 of 25 optometry schools participating in OptomCAS. Optometry Shadowing: Shadowing with an optometrist is a requirement for many optometry programs.

Present a Strong Application: Your optometry school personal statement and supplemental essays are your chance to convey your passion and aptitude for entering the optometry profession. Make a convincing case for why you should be accepted by showing that you have insight into the optometry profession, highlighting your skills, and demonstrating how your background has prepared you for this journey.
The Optometry Admissions Committee uses a holistic applicant review process. In addition to academic records, the Committee considers extracurricular activities, demonstrated interest and experience in the profession, personal statements, interview scores and letters of recommendation.

The applicant pool for optometry schools is diverse. There were 2,897 individuals who applied for admission to the schools and colleges of optometry in the United States with a total number of 12,536 applications. The median age of applicants was 22 years old, with 73% female and 26% male. The ethnicity breakdown for applicants was 42% White, 31% Asian, 13% Spanish/Hispanic/Latino/Latina, 5% Black/African-American, 4% two or more races, and less than 1% American Indian/Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, 70.8% of the full-time student body was female and 29.2% was male. In 2024, there were a total of 1,791 students who received OD degrees through both regular and special programs at the schools and colleges of optometry in the United States, a decrease of 2.0% over the number of 2023 graduates. Of the Doctor of Optometry students receiving OD degrees through both regular and special programs in 2024, 69.9% were female and 30.1% were male.
A Closer Look at Specific Optometry Schools
Southern College of Optometry (SCO)
To apply to Southern College of Optometry, you must complete the OptomCAS application and all supporting documents, SCO's supplemental application and fee, and take the Optometry Admission Test (OAT). SCO does not have a minimum OAT score or grade point average for acceptance. The average GPA of an entering class is typically around 3.50 and the average OAT score is around 330. SCO does not have a preference in academic majors as long as you complete the prerequisite courses and OAT before you apply for optometry school.
University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry
The Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) has granted the University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry the preaccreditation status of “Preliminary Approval.” Preliminary Approval status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Preliminary Approval status is not a guarantee that the ACOE will grant the University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry an accreditation status. Participants who graduate from a program in Preliminary Approval status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program. The University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry will be evaluated for the granting of an accreditation status during the academic year the first cohort is scheduled to graduate.
