Austin Partners in Education: Empowering Students for College and Career Success

Austin Partners in Education (APIE) has been a vital force in the Austin community, dedicated to preparing students for college and career success through individualized academic and mentoring programs. This article explores the history, mission, programs, and impact of APIE, highlighting its contributions to the Austin Independent School District (AISD) and the broader community.

A Legacy of Partnership and Support

Originally established in 1983 as Adopt-A-School by the Austin Independent School District and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, APIE became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2004. This transition marked a significant step in APIE's commitment to serving the students of AISD. APIE's mission is to provide college and career readiness support through individualized academic and mentoring programs to prepare students for success.

APIE works in partnership with Austin ISD to reinvent the urban-school experience and build a talent pipeline of local students to grow the regional economy. For over 20 years, Austin Partners in Education (APIE) has connected the community and the classroom to improve student college and career readiness. APIE believes that investing in our students strengthens our community and local economy.

Core Programs and Initiatives

APIE offers a range of programs designed to support students' academic and personal development. These programs are made possible through the dedication of volunteers and the support of community partners. A brief overview of APIE's programs follows:

College Readiness Program

APIE's flagship College Readiness Program works directly with students in AISD’s Early College High Schools to help them prepare for postsecondary programs and begin earning college credits while they’re still in high school.

Math Classroom Coaching

Volunteers meet weekly with small groups of students during math class to help increase students' understanding of math. Volunteer involvement increases students' engagement and their academic self-confidence. Andrew, a recent Math Classroom Coach, says: “I like seeing someone having that ‘lightbulb moment’ when a concept sinks in and they are able to repeat and master the new ability.

Secondary Mentoring

Volunteers dedicate an hour out of their week to provide one-on-one student support at a middle or high school. Through Austin Partners in Education’s Mentoring Program, caring adult volunteers help students improve their social skills, develop positive attitudes, and gain self-confidence. Each mentor-mentee pair meets for 45 minutes at an allotted time, each week, throughout the school year; mentors can choose any middle or high school in the Austin Independent School District.APIE Mentor Sydney B. reported that her weekly lunch meetings with her mentee "survived middle school, a pandemic, wait-listed high school enrollment for her and a season of professional uncertainty for me. My mentee is dynamic, quick-witted, and emotionally intelligent.

Focus on Mental Health

At APIE, it is understood that education and mental wellness go hand in hand. APIE recognizes the positive impact quality mentorship has on young peoples’ wellbeing and pathways to success.

The Impact of Mentoring

APIE's mentoring programs have had a profound impact on the lives of students. Mentors provide guidance, support, and encouragement, helping students to develop their social skills, build self-confidence, and achieve their goals. As one student shared, "My mentor teaches me stuff. He is super nice and caring.” Another student expressed, "I had lunch with my mentor for my birthday. After we finished eating, she told me all the things she likes about me, and how she was glad I was part of her life. I like talking to my mentor because she listens, and she thinks I’m funny."

Trinidad San Miguel, a 12-year APIE mentor, and his 10th grade mentee, Jackson, shared their inspirational mentor-mentee story at the Mentoring Matters Fundraiser.

Celebrating Diversity in Education

Diversity in education isn't just a buzzword - it's a powerful, necessary force for growth, understanding, and progress. In diverse classrooms, students are exposed to perspectives they may never encounter otherwise. They learn to listen, empathize, and collaborate across differences. Celebrating diversity in education means recognizing the unique strengths each student brings to the table. It means including diverse voices in curricula, promoting inclusive policies, and actively challenging stereotypes and systemic barriers.

Transition and Sustainability

After more than 20 years of supporting Austin ISD students, APIE’s programs have transitioned to the district and are funded by the Austin Ed Fund to ensure sustainability. APIE is proud of the impact it has made and deeply grateful for its community of volunteers, partners, and supporters who helped thousands of students prepare for college and career success.

Opportunities for Community Involvement

While APIE's direct mentoring program may be evolving, the need for mentors in the Austin community remains strong. For anyone interested in mentoring, APIE recommends signing up with one of its dedicated community partners:

  • Communities In Schools of Central Texas (CIS) offers a variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities, including one-on-one mentoring, academic support, and group engagement activities, all designed to help students thrive in school and beyond. With flexible options and campuses across Central Texas, there’s a way for everyone to get involved.
  • Seedling is a school based mentoring program exclusively serving students who have an incarcerated parent or parent figure. Mentors meet at school, during the students lunch and are 100% supported by an assigned Seedling Mentor Director for the life of the match.

Volunteers are crucial to APIE's success. Volunteer involvement increases students' engagement and their academic self-confidence. APIE is developing the young professionals of tomorrow while promoting the spirit of voluntarism in the Austin community today.
