Arizona Christian University Football: A History of Fire and Storm
The Arizona Christian University (ACU) Firestorm football team has carved a notable place for itself in the realm of intercollegiate athletics in a relatively short period. As a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Firestorm have demonstrated a consistent ability to compete at a high level, securing multiple conference championships and earning national recognition.
The Genesis of a Program
The announcement of the football program's inception came on September 14, 2013, when Arizona Christian president Len Munsil revealed that the team would commence NAIA competition in the subsequent season. This announcement triggered a nationwide search for the program's inaugural head coach, drawing considerable interest with over 100 applications received. Ultimately, on December 19, 2013, Donnie Yantis was appointed as ACU's first head football coach.
Early Success and CSFL Dominance
Despite a rocky start with three losses in non-conference play, the Firestorm quickly turned the tide in their inaugural season. Displaying remarkable resilience and determination, the team won their next six games, securing the Central States Football League (CSFL) championship. This unexpected triumph defied initial expectations, particularly after the team's slow start. The Firestorm concluded their remarkable first season ranked No. 17 in the nation.
The 2016 season mirrored the success of the previous year. The team finished undefeated in conference play with an overall record of 7-3, winning their second consecutive CSFL championship. The team again finished the season ranked No. 22 in the nation.
Coaching Transition and Continued Excellence
Following the 2015 season, Donnie Yantis accepted a position with Arizona State University, leading to the promotion of assistant head coach Jeff Bowen to the head coaching role. This transition did not disrupt the program's momentum, as the Firestorm continued to achieve success under Bowen's leadership.

Sooner Athletic Conference Championships
The Firestorm's success extended beyond the CSFL, with the team securing two championships in the Sooner Athletic Conference. These victories occurred in the 2020/21 split season, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and again in 2022.
Individual Achievements
The Arizona Christian football program has also celebrated individual accomplishments. Punter Derek Brush became the first NAIA All-American in the program's history, marking a significant milestone for the team.
