Understanding Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible for the Horatio Alger Association’s scholarships, applicants must be United States citizens. If born in another country, proof of citizenship is required. The scholarships target students facing and overcoming significant adversities, who exhibit integrity, perseverance, and a commitment to higher education. The program specifically supports students with significant financial need, defined as a household income of $100,000 or less.
Academic Institution Criteria
Scholars generally must attend a non-profit public or private accredited four-year institution in the United States on a full-time basis, pursuing an uninterrupted course leading to an undergraduate bachelor’s degree. Two-year colleges qualify for the first two years of study, if the credits are transferable to an accredited four-year college or university. The Association does not provide funds to proprietary (for-profit) or online colleges. To verify that a college is not a proprietary institution, applicants can search for their college and read the description about the school stating if it is a public, private, or proprietary school.
Acceptable Majors and Funding
Undergraduate scholarship recipients may pursue any major of their choice leading to a bachelor’s degree, unless other scholarships or funding cover the full Cost of Attendance.

The Adversity Section and Support Form
The Adversity section provides an opportunity for applicants to share the types of adversities they have experienced in their life. A Support Form is an online form completed by a Support Form provider, containing all of the information submitted in the Adversity section of the application. A Support Form Provider must be an adult over the age of 21 who is not related to the applicant. This individual should be familiar with the adversities described in the application and who can provide additional information and insights about the applicant and their ability to overcome these challenges.
Certification Form
The Certification Form is an online form completed by the student’s high school counselor to verify the student’s academic information.
Income Verification
Required income verification documentation is based on the student's status. Electronic (PDF) IRS tax transcripts are available immediately.
Important Dates and Notifications
The undergraduate scholarship applications are open now through March 1st for high school juniors and February 15th for high school seniors. The Horatio Alger Association prepares to open its 2026 application window on December 1, 2025. Applications for current high school juniors will remain open until March 1, 2026, while current seniors must apply by February 15, 2026. Only applicants who have been awarded a scholarship will be notified. Disbursement information will be sent in May of every year, at which time recipients will be required to request their funds online for the upcoming year. Funds will be sent directly to the college to be credited to the student's account.
Career and Technical Scholarship Program
The Horatio Alger Career and Technical Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their lives who wish to pursue a career or technical education at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States. Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books and supplies. All scholarship funds are paid directly to the institution on behalf of the recipient. The Career and Technical Scholarship application opens annually March 15 with a priority deadline of June 15.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Career and Technical Scholarship, applicants must:
- Have completed high school (or earned a high school equivalency credential)
- Will be enrolled in eligible program in Fall 2022
- Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical program (up to 2 years) at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States
- Demonstrated critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)
- Demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity
- Be under the age of 30
- Be a United States citizen
Scholarship Recipients will Receive up to $2,500 for an Associate or Technical Degree/Certificate
Additional Support
The Association noted that applicants will be supported through a newly launched Online Scholarship Toolkit, which will be released closer to the opening date.
