UNMC Student Health Services: A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness Resources

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) prioritizes the health and well-being of its students. To that end, UNMC offers a wide array of health services and resources, ensuring students have access to comprehensive care throughout their academic journey. From preventative measures to urgent care, UNMC is committed to supporting the health and safety of its students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors. With access to an on-campus student health clinic, flu shot clinics, counseling services, fitness centers, a food pantry, and other wellness services, students have many ways to stay healthy during their time at UNMC.

Comprehensive Health Services

Student Health Clinic

The Student Health Clinic, located on the second floor of the Student Life Center, is a primary resource for UNMC students. It offers outpatient services covered by the Fund B fee, a mandatory fee paid by all students. Fund B helps cover services in the Student Health Clinic. It is important to note that Fund B is not medical insurance.

The Student Health Clinic strives to provide knowledge of and take precautions to prevent communicable diseases for students preparing to enter the health care profession. Immunizations are an extremely important part of this effort for students during their tenure at UNMC and as future medical care providers. These immunization requirements work towards ensuring the health and safety across the entire UNMC community of patients, faculty, students, and visitors.

Students must present a validated photo ID and proof of insurance at the time of their visit, as not all in-clinic services are covered by Fund B.

Insurance Coverage

UNMC requires full-time students to have inpatient hospitalization health insurance. In addition to the UNMC Student Health Clinic, UNMC has contracted with United Healthcare Student Resources Insurance Company to provide accident/illness insurance coverage. Students may participate in the UNMC-sponsored plan through United Healthcare Student Resources or they may have their own plan through a parent, spouse, employer, or self. The cost of the United Healthcare Student Insurance is automatically billed each fall and spring semester on the full-time student’s tuition statement/bill. If students do not wish to participate in the University plan through United Healthcare, they must file a waiver verifying alternate insurance. The University of Nebraska Medical Center also offers inpatient (hospitalization) insurance (which includes dental and prescription coverage within the Plan) to dependents of students thru United Healthcare.

For students covered by United Healthcare Student Resource Insurance, it is crucial to ensure that all necessary referrals for appointments outside the Student Health Clinic are in place BEFORE the appointment, with the exception of Emergency Room visits or ICC visits.

Urgent and Emergent Care

Students who experience acute illness or injury requiring urgent care can seek treatment at the Nebraska Medicine Midtown Clinic or the UNMC Emergency Department. Follow-up care should then be managed at the Student Health Clinic. Students outside a 50-mile radius for academic purposes requiring urgent/emergent care may be seen at an area outpatient facility. Services will be billed to the student's major medical insurance (UNMC Student Health Insurance or other personal insurance). Coverage by the student’s insurance policy may involve a deductible, applicable co-insurance and/or policy provisions/limitations.

Students are encouraged to seek care at an in-network United Urgent Care facility instead of the hospital emergency room, as the total charge for an in-network Urgent Care visit is $75. If at all possible in an emergency situation, students should go to the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine emergency room.

Additional Services Not Covered by Fund B

Dental services are not covered under Student Health Fund B. Check your coverage under the United Healthcare Student Recourses Insurance Plan. The College of Dentistry clinics in Lincoln offer general dental services and specialty services in endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, pedodontics and periodontics. The College of Dentistry Clinic in the University of Nebraska Outpatient Care Center in Omaha offers services in general dentistry, pedodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Annual Routine Eye Exams are also excluded from Fund B coverage. (Corrective lenses and associated fitting fees are excluded). Exams are performed at the Stanley M.

Confidentiality and Patient Rights

Your medical records are kept in strict confidence. Only with your written release can your records be copied and sent to a third party. Student Health staff strongly believe that each person is entitled to certain rights as a patient. Additionally, each patient has certain responsibilities. Together, these ensure that each individual receives the appropriate medical care and personal services he/she deserves.

Student Involvement and Feedback

The student health program coordinators report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success. As the Student Senate advisor, the Associate Vice Chancellor meets with the Student Senate and the Executive Committee on a regular basis to get feedback on Student Health Services and the UNMC-sponsored Student Insurance Plan. Issues regarding Student Health policy, clinical services or fees are discussed with the full Student Senate and the Executive Committee prior to implementing any changes.

UNMC's Impact and Future Initiatives

UNMC's world-class research results in breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska - and beyond. Our expert faculty are training the next generation of health care providers and improving the care of patients throughout our region.

Project Health, a $2.19 billion health care facility at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, will serve as a clinical learning center to train the next generation of health care providers, conduct research and offer clinical trials. It will serve as the primary in-patient clinical hospital for Nebraska Medicine. Project Health is the first phase of Project NExT, a joint effort between UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.

The EDGE District, under development on the west edge of UNMC's Omaha campus, will include Catalyst, a building that will allow entrepreneurs, investors and businesses to collaborate in the renovated 1906 Omaha Steel Castings industrial tract, and the CORE (Campus Operations and Research Excellence) Building, which will support computer-based research and wet lab-based research for drug discovery, oncology and other strategic areas. EDGE stands for Explore, Develop, Grow and Engage.
