Becoming a certified teacher is a significant undertaking, with specific requirements varying considerably depending on the grade level, subject matter, and the state in which you wish to teach. The professional teaching certificate remains continuously valid as long as the teacher completes 175 hours of professional development every five years. It can take up to three to four months for the New York State Education Department to process your application.

Background Checks and Fingerprinting

All teachers are required to submit to a federal and state criminal background check as well as fingerprinting. Since many schools require fingerprinting before student fieldwork begins, this should be addressed early in the process.

Interstate Reciprocity
