Aisha Bowe: From WCC to Space

Encouraged by her father to take a math course at WCC after initially planning to pursue cosmetology, Bowe discovered her passion and purpose. After attending WCC from 2003 to 2006, Bowe transferred to the University of Michigan, where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in aerospace engineering and space systems engineering, respectively. She then worked as a NASA rocket scientist before becoming an entrepreneur. Bowe's achievements have been widely recognized, and she frequently mentions her start at WCC in interviews and on social media. She has also given back to the college by endowing the Aisha R. Bowe Scholarship to support future generations of students. In April 2024, Bowe achieved a lifelong dream by flying on a Blue Origin flight, where she served as a science payload operator, conducting multiple experiments to support future food security.
John E. Lawrence: A Legacy in Music Education
John E. Lawrence is another distinguished alumnus and former faculty member who has left an indelible mark on Washtenaw Community College. Lawrence served as a professional instructor, the head of the Music Performance Program, and the Chair of the Performing Arts Department for 36 years before retiring in 2015. During his tenure, he developed 22 courses, three music performance certificate programs, and wrote 16 instructional books on guitar performance. His guitar instruction books have been used as textbooks for his Jazz Guitar Courses at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan since they were first published in 2001. The Jazz Guitar Courses have played an important role in the WCC’s Music Performance Program. The books are sold to guitar students worldwide.

Lawrence is also the creator and producer of the Living Legend Series, which brought renowned musicians such as Mavis Staples, The Four Tops, Ashford and Simpson, Earl Klugh, and The Temptations to the WCC campus. As an educator, composer, and music historian, "Doc" Lawrence, as he was affectionately known, served as the Chair of the Performing Arts Department and Director of the award-winning WCC Jazz Orchestra. He was a mentor to many, including John E. Lawrence, and his legacy of excellence and goodwill continues to inspire students and faculty. The Morris Lawrence Award was established in 1994 to honor his contributions to the college and community. In May 1989 at 7:30 PM, a Jazz Cavalcade was held at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. The Washtenaw Community College Jazz Orchestra under the Direction of Dr. Morris J. Lawrence was among the performing groups, and the performance consisted primarily of his compositions.
