Peabody College of Education and Human Development

Peabody College of Education and Human Development consistently ranks among the top graduate schools of education in the United States. It excels in preparing students for classroom teaching, research, service, and various other fields. Applicants to Peabody College must specify their major, as the fit for the intended major and the available space in that major significantly influence the admission decision.

School of Engineering

The Vanderbilt University School of Engineering prides itself on educating students who use technology to change the world and make it a better place. While students are not admitted to a specific major within the School of Engineering, a strong background in science and math is crucial for competitive applicants. Specifically, college-level courses in Physics, Calculus, and Chemistry are expected to be completed at the time of admission (or currently in progress).

Blair School of Music

The Blair School of Music provides world-class music training within a strong liberal arts environment. It stands out as the only music school among the top twenty-ranked universities solely for undergraduates. Blair students benefit from a 4:1 student-to-faculty ratio and a 5:1 student-to-practice-room ratio.

All applicants to Blair must complete the Blair School of Music Application in addition to the Coalition Application or the Common Application. Detailed information regarding application requirements for Blair applicants can be found at blair.vanderbilt.edu/admissions/apply.

GPA Expectations and Academic Performance

Admission to Vanderbilt as a transfer student is highly competitive and relies on various factors, with academic performance being paramount. Typically, admitted transfer students have a GPA of B+/A- or higher. While there isn't an official GPA minimum, successful transfer applicants to Vanderbilt often have a college GPA of about a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Transfer Credit Requirements

Students from accredited institutions are welcome to apply for transfer admission. Vanderbilt considers an applicant a transfer student if they have completed the equivalent of at least 12 semester hours of credit after completing high school (high school degree or GED). Courses taken as dual-enrollment do not count towards these hours if those credits are being used to graduate from a high school program. Admitted transfer students are required to be enrolled for at least four semesters (60 credit hours) to earn a degree from Vanderbilt University.

Holistic Review Process

Vanderbilt employs a holistic approach to review applicants, considering academic achievement, community engagement and leadership, personal essays, short answer responses, and letters of recommendation. The admissions process gives preference to students who have demonstrated full-time engagement and enrollment in a similar campus community at their current institution. All parts of the application (academics, test scores if submitted, extracurricular involvement, essay, recommendation letters etc.) will be considered as Vanderbilt makes its decisions.

Financial Aid and Opportunity Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students, including transfer students. The admissions process is need-blind for US citizens and eligible non-citizens. Vanderbilt makes three important commitments to admitted students through Opportunity Vanderbilt. Financial aid awards do not include loans.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Academic credit earned at accredited institutions is evaluated on a course-by-course basis by the Office of the University Registrar. Work transferred to Vanderbilt from another institution will not carry with it a grade point average. The Transfer Credit Search tool can be used to see if classes have been previously approved for credit.

Housing

Given the start of construction on the next phase of the university's residential college system, transfer students are eligible to live off campus or in Vanderbilt-affiliated off-campus housing. Limited on-campus housing options will also be available, including traditional double rooms or vacancies in suites/apartments with continuing upper-division students.

Veterans and Active Military

Vanderbilt University participates in the Yellow Ribbon program. The application requirements for Veterans and Active Military are the same as for other transfer students.

Additional Information

  • After submitting the application, applicants will be instructed to create a MyAppVU portal.
  • Vanderbilt does not offer interviews through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Through partnerships with Glimpse and InitialView, Vanderbilt offers optional video submission opportunities for applicants.
  • Vanderbilt generally awards college credit for a score of 4 or 5 on an Advanced Placement exam or 6 or 7 on an International Baccalaureate exam, though required scores vary depending on the exam.
  • Vanderbilt does not consider demonstrated interest during the application review process.
  • An alumni affiliation is merely one data point out of many data points considered during the application review process. Vanderbilt does not hold spots for students who have an alumni affiliation. Legacy applicants are held to the same standards of admission and are part of the same process as all other applicants.
  • Students may use various forms of assistance as they prepare their application, including ChatGPT and other forms of AI, but AI should never be used to replace independent thinking on the part of the applicant.
