Understanding UTK ACT Score Requirements and Admission Standards

Gaining admission to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) requires a multifaceted approach. The Evolving Landscape of Guaranteed Admissions

The University of Tennessee System has standardized its language across all campuses to include standardized test scores in its guaranteed admissions requirements for top-performing high school seniors. The biggest change to the guaranteed admissions policy most applies to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The flagship campus previously did not require an ACT or SAT score for guaranteed admission. UT Chattanooga, UT Martin and UT Southern did.

The ACT and SAT score requirements, which vary between universities, are in addition to requirements related to student performance and class standing. Previously, UT Knoxville only required a 4.0 cumulative GPA or that students finish in the top 10% of their class for guaranteed admission. Other campuses had their own requirements, including a lower GPA benchmark and an ACT score.

Here's how the new policy will work for students applying for fall 2025:

For UT Knoxville: Students must get either a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) or finish in the top 10% of their high school graduating class. And students need a 24 ACT composite score (or an SAT score of 1160-1190 or higher).
For UT Chattanooga, UT Martin and UT Southern: Students must get either at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA or finish in the top 10% of their high school graduating class. And students need a 23 ACT composite score (or an SAT score of 1130-1150 or higher).

Reasons for Policy Changes

The original guaranteed admissions policy was approved in September 2023 as a way to give top-earning high schoolers in Tennessee the opportunity to receive early admission to any UT campus across the state. However, several factors prompted a reevaluation of the policy.

According to UT Knoxville Chancellor Donde Plowman, only 30% of Tennessee high schools reported class ranking data to UT for the high school graduating class of 2024. That's just 226 of 740 high schools. The original guaranteed admissions policy also was challenged by the lower requirements from UT Martin, UT Chattanooga and UT Southern. Their policies, which required a 3.2 GPA and 23 ACT composite score, were so close to standard admission criteria that prospective students were worried no guaranteed admission would mean no admission at all, according to Bernie Savarese, vice president for academic affairs, research and student success for the UT System.

When the UT System Board of Trustees kicked off its annual meeting June 24, Savarese presented a different version of the proposed changes that would have made 4.0 the required GPA for all campuses. The top 10% criteria also would have been dropped. But because the guaranteed admissions policy is so new, the board was hesitant to make such drastic changes. The policy needs more time for data to accrue before it can be reevaluated at a higher level, trustee Jamie Woodson said during the meeting.

Understanding UTK's Holistic Admissions Approach

UTK views test scores as an important part of the application but takes a holistic approach to reviewing applications. This means that while your ACT score can play a significant role, they also consider your GPA, the rigor of your high school curriculum, your extracurricular involvement, letters of recommendation, and essays.

Analyzing ACT Scores for UTK Admission

The average ACT score at University of Tennessee is 28. Half the applicants admitted to University of Tennessee--Knoxville who submitted test scores have an ACT score between 25 and 31. The 25th percentile ACT score is 25, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 31.

This indicates that 25% of admitted students scored below a 26, while another 25% scored above a 31. Scoring at a 28 ACT or above will already give you a great shot at getting in. If your score is within this range, your chances of admission would generally be quite good.

Even though University of Tennessee likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 25 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application.

The Significance of GPA

The average GPA at University of Tennessee is 4.17. The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. requires you to be at the top of your class. You'll need nearly straight A's in all your classes to compete with other applicants. If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications.

If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4.17, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.

Strategic Test-Taking: Superscoring to Your Advantage

UT uses the superscoring method, meaning we take your highest section scores of each test taken to determine your new composite score for consideration. In order to qualify for Guaranteed Admission, ACT scores must be self-reported or received by the November 15 completion deadline.

When you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 28 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can.

University of Tennessee does in fact offer an ACT superscore policy. Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, University of Tennessee will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and University of Tennessee forms your Superscore, you can take the ACT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your ACT score is currently below a 28, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the ACT and retaking it. Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the ACT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on.

Other Factors in UTK Admissions

Acceptance Rate

The acceptance rate at University of Tennessee is 41.6%. The school expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they're more flexible than other schools. If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in.

Essays and Recommendations

Even with a strong ACT score and GPA, compelling essays and strong letters of recommendation can significantly enhance your application. It's important to present a well-rounded, comprehensive application to showcase not only your academic abilities but also your character and potential to contribute to the university community.

Additional Considerations for Specific Programs

Some of our programs require more than an application to UT. Depending on the concentration you choose, you may be required to audition and/or interview. First year students who are applying for direct entry will be evaluated by their application for admission to UT. The required minimum weighted core GPA is a 3.5 and an ACT of 25 (or SAT ERW+M of 1220). Applicants are offered admission to the Pre-Pharmacy Direct Admit Program based on holistic evaluation by the faculty and staff of the UT College of Pharmacy. Admissions criteria is based on several performance criteria, including completion of core academic subjects, GPA scores on these subjects, and standardized test (SAT or ACT) scores. We will calculate a Success Prediction Indicator (SPI). For consideration in the Tickle College of Engineering, your minimum SPI predictor should be at least 60 and a math ACT of 25 or a math SAT of 590. The admitted class may also be limited by space available in the college.
