Merit Scholarships for Freshmen and Transfer Students

Utica University offers merit scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $6,000 for freshman (undergraduate) students and $1,000 to $3,000 for transfer students. You will be automatically considered for a scholarship when you submit your completed general application for admission. You do not have to apply separately for a scholarship.

University Scholarships

University Scholarships are awarded to full-time freshmen upon admission to Utica University based on academic achievement. Awards are made on the basis of academic and personal achievements. Special restrictions apply to dependent scholarships. These awards are based on the highest academic achievement and community service. This scholarship is renewable, contingent upon students making and maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

Thomas J. Cahill, Jr. '49 Scholarship

This scholarship is funded through the generosity of Thomas J. Cahill, Jr. '49. These awards are based on high academic achievement and an ability to contribute to the Utica University community. This scholarship is renewable.

Frontier Award

Beginning with the Fall of 2026, New First-Time and Transfer students who are US Citizens or Permanent Residents and reside outside of New York State will receive a $2000 Frontier Award. Students from the adjacent states of Connecticut (Roberta Willis), Maine (Maine State Grant Program), Ohio (OCOG), Maryland (Howard P. Rawlings Educational Assistance Grant) and Pennsylvania (PHEAA) are eligible to increase the amount of their Frontier Award to match the annual amount of their associated state grant. Frontier Awards will be automatically applied at the $2000 level. Students seeking a state grant match will be required to submit confirmation of their state grant in their application portal. These awards are based on academic success and commitment to succeed. This grant is renewable.

Transfer Student Awards

These awards are for transfer students who have completed, and will transfer, a minimum of 30 hours of university work. To be eligible for this award, transfer students must maintain full-time status. Honors Program Scholarship

The Honors Program Scholarship is awarded to students based on the highest academic achievement.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Awards

These awards are based on induction into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Need-Based Scholarships

These awards are granted to students who demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is renewable.

My Turn Scholarship

The My Turn Scholarship shall be awarded to full-time students who are the parents of alumni of Utica University or of current Utica University students. This scholarship has the value of one-half tuition.

Dr. Henry R. and Rose DiSpirito Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Henry R. and Rose DiSpirito Memorial Scholarship is available to full-time, junior and senior-level undergraduate students at Utica University who are majoring in the area of arts, including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, theatre, dance, or music.

Senior Citizens Enrichment Program Fund

Through the generosity of Mary S. Kramer '88, a Senior Citizens Enrichment Program Fund has been established for eligible senior citizens to take University classes at no cost to them. To be eligible an individual must be age 65 or older and a non-matriculated student. Qualified individuals may enroll in undergraduate or graduate courses, including online courses. Enrollment in classes are limited to 6 credit hours or less per semester and are not at capacity. The University does have the discretion to allow enrollment into classes that are at capacity.

Transitional B Apprenticeship Teacher Preparation Program Scholarships

Utica University’s Educator Preparation Program is addressing the growing teacher shortage through major financial incentives to enroll. Ten full-tuition scholarships are available for Utica University’s Transitional-B Apprenticeship Teacher Preparation online master’s degree program for those who enroll in the spring 2026 semester.

The Transitional B Apprenticeship Teacher Preparation Program is an accelerated certification pathway for individuals with a bachelor's degree in the subject they wish to teach to become full-time, transitionally certified teachers in less than a year. Students would then complete the remainder of their program while teaching.

The scholarship funding is available through a $1.2 million New York State Education Workforce Development Grant through the New York State Department of Labor. Utica University was one of a select number of institutions who received the award in 2024.

In addition to covering 100 percent of tuition and fees, scholarship awards includes a stipend. Scholarships are awarded through a competitive review process and are limited to New York state residents. Preferred consideration will be given to qualified applicants who are interested in teaching within the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES District.

Certification subject areas include Special Education, Technology (Pre-K-Grade 12), Math, English, the sciences, Social Studies, and World Languages (Grades 7-12). The deadline for scholarship applications is Nov. 1, but candidates are encouraged to apply for the program as soon as possible.

Pioneer Passport Program

With Pioneer Passport, qualified first-year students can attend Utica University tuition-free.

Utica Dollars for Scholars

Utica Dollars for Scholars (UDFS) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization founded in 1994 and affiliated with Scholarship America. They are a proud partner in scholarship management with The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties. The UDFS mission is to establish and maintain a growing source of financial and academic support for local students.

Utica Dollars for Scholars (UDFS) was selected by UpMobility Foundation to receive a dollar-for-dollar match of gifts to UDFS. This means gifts of any amount can be matched by the Foundation up to a total of $15,000.

Since its inception in 1994, the organization has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships totaling approximately $3.4 million. In 2025, nearly 200 scholarship awards totaling over $350,000 flowed through the Utica Dollars for Scholars programs. Contributions by individuals, families, businesses, and organizations made this possible for awards throughout Oneida and Herkimer Counties.

Utica Dollars for Scholars (UDFS) has a single online application for all local awards. There are many scholarship opportunities currently available for students at nearly every high school in Oneida and Herkimer counties.

The deadline for completing and submitting the one comprehensive application for Utica Dollars for Scholars is March 15, 2026. Be attentive to all content required in the STUDENT PROFILE, particularly academic information, reference and transcript requests, essay questions, employment, school and community activities, and the Financial Info section. ALSO, select and submit all appropriate awards under the 'MY SCHOLARSHIPS' tab. Note that the Goals and Aspiration Essay is very important and can be 300 words or fewer.

The application must include requested comprehensive student information including the financial section, goals essay, high school transcript, and recommendation. There is no cost to the student or family.

In an online survey on the UDFS information sharing and scholarship application processes, 94% of respondents selected the highest two categories regarding overall satisfaction. Seven out of ten respondents, or 72% of current-year scholarship recipients, referred or recommended other students to use the Utica Dollars for Scholars online application.

Mele Family Fund Scholarships

Apply today for the Mele Family Fund Scholarships, each of 19 awards (at 17 high schools) are worth up to $12,000 over a four-year period. Managed by The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, the Mele Scholarships are available only to students at selected high schools graduating this year in Oneida and Herkimer Counties. Graduating seniors with specific academic intent and qualifications, and who will be attending a four-year college or university and a 3.0 GPA with financial need are eligible for consideration.

The James H. Wurz Jr. and Edward T. Wurz Sr. Foundation Scholarship

Utica Dollars for Scholars is pleased to announce its partnership with The James H. Wurz Jr. and Edward T. Wurz Sr. Foundation on a new scholarship opportunity of five annual and renewable awards. Applicants are generally graduating high school seniors; however, delayed enrollment, post-high school, and non-traditional students who have earned a GED and are enrolling in higher education are also eligible to apply. Current year graduating high school senior, in a school geographically located in Oneida County. The minimum academic average required for eligibility is a 2.5 GPA for both initial awards and renewals.

The Wurz Family Scholarship aims to support students who demonstrate a balanced approach to life and education, possess a positive outlook on their future, understand the importance of maintaining a good academic record, and value personal fulfillment. Eligible applicants are generally graduating high school seniors; however, delayed enrollment, post-high school, and non-traditional students who have earned a GED and are enrolling in higher education are also eligible to apply. The minimum academic average required for eligibility is a 2.5 GPA for both initial awards and renewals. Initial applicants and renewals will also be considered for selection based on their unmet financial needs as they pursue their higher education goals.

Specific Scholarship Awards

  • Leonard J. Capuana Memorial Award: One graduating senior having a minimum HS grade point average of 2.5 or equivalent and who exhibits leadership in school or community.
  • Credit Bureau of Utica Scholarship: One graduating senior with a minimum 2.0 (B) academic average who will be attending an accredited higher education institution located in Oneida or Herkimer Counties and pursuing a business or health care program. Other qualifications are a minimum HS grade point average of B or equivalent, with work experience and participation in volunteer or community service.
  • Wallace S. and Janis J. Leonard Scholarship: A student exhibiting leadership skills and volunteerism in the community. For a graduating senior from any Oneida or Herkimer County High School who will be attending a local higher education institution. The minimum qualifications are a student pursuing Business or Health Care as a first career choice and with a minimum grade point average of B (3.0 GPA) or better. This award is in memory of Joe Karam, resulting from family and friends creating a donor-advised fund at the Foundation. Academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement are among the criteria.
  • MV Alumni Association of Alpha Phi Delta Award: One graduating HS senior illustrating academic achievement, leadership, school and community involvement. The preferred recipient is a legacy nominee who is a child or grandchild of a former APD Fraternity member.
  • William B. Recknall Memorial Fund: THREE graduating seniors. A student demonstrating leadership, promise, good character, and potential attending an accredited US college or university.
  • William L. & Gladys K. Boyle Memorial Scholarship Fund: One graduating senior pursuing a career in elementary education, in particular, Kindergarten.
  • Peter D. Fraser Memorial Scholarship: One FEMALE and one MALE graduating senior, who is a school athlete, and having average scholastic achievement. A background in community service has shown strength and courage under adverse circumstances, a person of integrity with a sense of humor.
  • New Hartford Alumni Association Memorial Scholarship: One FEMALE and one MALE graduating senior demonstrating academic improvement.
  • Benjamin Zahir Mufti Scholarship Fund: One graduating senior planning to major in English and pursuing a course of study in creative writing and enrolling in an accredited 4-Year college or university. Also, demonstrating financial need.
  • Utica Lady Knicks Scholarship: The Utica Lady Knicks Scholarship was established to provide support for current and former members of the Utica Lady Knicks. In the UDFS online application, please answer the question which asks that you describe your participation as a member of the Utica Lady Knicks. Applications for the Utica Lady Knicks Award are due by March 15.
  • Jaedon Jarosz Memorial Scholarship: A total of three scholarship awards will be distributed by Utica Dollars for Scholars. A graduating senior from Proctor, Notre Dame, and New York Mills High Schools will each be awarded a one-time grant of $1,000. Recipients will matriculate in college this coming Fall 2026 in the academic areas of art, music, or the culinary arts.
  • SFC Eric Nichols Award: Awarded at Remsen HS this year.
  • Benson Scholarship: Awarded at Sauquoit Valley and Waterville high schools this year.

Scholarships for Study Abroad

  • Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Awards are varying amounts up to $5,000. Students must submit academic transcripts, a statement of purpose essay, and 2 community impact essays in order to be considered.
  • Inclusive Ireland Scholarship Program: This program is a partnership between Education in Ireland and Diversity Abroad. It aims to provide academically rigorous and culturally immersive study abroad experiences for students from all backgrounds and identities. To be considered, you must: Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at a college or university in the United States, Identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), Intend to study abroad at one of the participating colleges or universities in Ireland, and Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
  • Sleeknote Scholarship: Sleeknote offers a $1,000 scholarship to two students each year. Applicants must create a video explaining their purpose for applying, why they should receive the scholarship, why they chose their field of study, their planned profession, future goals, and how the scholarship will help them.
  • Scott’s Cheap Flights Scholarship: This scholarship offers $1000 for students who are studying abroad on a semester or summer program. All students have to do is write a 500-1000 word essay and be a full time student studying abroad through an accredited school.
  • Explore the World Travel Scholarships: HI USA offers $2,000 scholarships to help finance international trips with an educational or service component. Applicants must: be US citizens or permanent residents, have a demonstrated financial need, reside or attend school in one of the 13 metropolitan areas where HI USA has a community presence, and be planning an upcoming international trip that involves an educational and/or volunteer service component.
  • Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded biannually to students who want to explore the world. Applicants will write one 500-word essay on what they hope to learn by experiencing another culture and how they will apply those lessons when they return home.
  • Freeman-ASIA Scholarship: This scholarship is for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Students chosen for this scholarship will receive up to $5,000 for a semester long study abroad program.
  • Bright!Tax Global Scholar Initiative: The Bright!Tax Global Scholar Initiative will offer supplemental fees support to the next generation of young Americans who are currently studying or who would like to study abroad. The Bright!Tax Global Scholar Initiative will provide scholarships of a minimum of $1000. Awards will be made on an ongoing basis, and paid directly to accredited institutions.
  • Bridging Project Scholarships: The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation funds scholarships through AATJ to help students’ study abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Bridging Scholarship recipients will be expected to participate in an orientation program via Zoom prior to their departure and to send a brief report about their study in Japan to the AATJ office within 90 days of returning from abroad.

New York State's Excelsior Scholarship

The Excelsior Scholarship, upon being awarded, covers the tuition at a state institution. Room, board, books, fees, etc, still remain the responsibility of the student, at times far outweighing the cost of the covered tuition.
