Understanding UT Dallas GPA Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) has specific Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements for admission, financial aid eligibility, and maintaining good academic standing. This article provides a detailed overview of these requirements for prospective and current students.

Admission Requirements Overview

Gaining admission to UT Dallas requires a multifaceted approach, with GPA playing a significant role. UT Dallas has a moderately selective admission process, with an acceptance rate of approximately 65.1%. While exceeding the minimum requirements significantly increases your chances, meeting them makes you eligible for admission.

GPA Expectations for Admission

UT Dallas expects applicants to be above average in their high school class. A mix of A's and B's is generally needed, with more A's than B's preferred. Although the school average GPA is around 3.69, students can compensate for a slightly lower GPA by demonstrating academic rigor through AP or IB classes.

Standardized Testing and GPA

While UT Dallas is test-flexible, meaning they don't explicitly require SAT/ACT scores, submitting strong scores can bolster your application. If your GPA is at or below the average of 3.69, a higher SAT or ACT score can compensate. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1170, and the 75th percentile is 1390. For the ACT, the average score is 28, with the 25th percentile at 24 and the 75th percentile at 32.

Automatic Admission

As mandated by Texas law, students graduating in the top 10% of their class from an accredited Texas high school and successfully earning the Distinguished Level of Achievement are automatically admitted to UT Dallas as first-time freshmen. Applicants must have graduated from high school during one of the two school years preceding the academic year for which they seek admission as first-time freshmen and have not attempted any higher education credits since graduation from high school.

GPA and Financial Aid Eligibility

To remain eligible for financial aid at UT Dallas, students must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress (SAP). This is based on both qualitative (GPA) and quantitative (completion rate/maximum timeframe) standards.

Qualitative Standard (GPA)

Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA as specified for their major to remain academically eligible to enroll for subsequent semesters. Only grades received in UT Dallas classes are used to compute the GPA. Transfer credit from other institutions accepted by the University is calculated in the number of semester credit hours required for graduation.

Quantitative Standard (Pace Rate)

Students must successfully complete a percentage of all attempted hours that is in line with completing their degree requirements within the overall maximum time frame for a degree program. This is called a pace rate requirement and is evaluated each term. The undergraduate student pace rate requirement is graduated by overall attempted hour ranges. Transfer credit hours accepted by UT Dallas as credit are counted as attempted and completed hours in the pace rate calculation. Repeated courses count as attempted hours. The grade from the first attempt will not be used in computing a student’s GPA.

Financial Aid Warning and Probation

The first time a student fails to meet the minimum GPA or completion rate required for the standards of academic progress, he or she will be placed on a financial aid warning status for the next term of enrollment. While financial aid will be provided for students in a warning status, the student must make satisfactory progress to remain eligible for aid. Students on financial aid suspension due to their failure to meet the minimum GPA or completion rate requirements may qualify for reinstatement of their financial aid eligibility by meeting the requirements of the satisfactory academic progress policy for financial aid in the next or a future term. A student who successfully meets the requirements for reinstatement will be placed on financial aid probation and will be eligible to receive financial aid for the probation term.

Appeals Process

Students who have extenuating circumstances may appeal a financial aid suspension by submitting a Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal to the Office of Financial Aid. The Financial Aid Appeals Committee will review the petition and will contact the student when a decision has been made.

Academic Standing and GPA

A student is considered to be making satisfactory scholastic progress when he or she is carrying an approved schedule of classes, is not on probation, and has a GPA of at least 2.000 (C average) in the major and overall.

Minimum GPA Requirements

A minimum GPA of 2.000 on a 4.000 scale (C average) is required in the major and related courses, in any declared minor and overall. Major preparatory classes are included in the calculation of the major GPA. Only grades earned at The University of Texas at Dallas are used in calculating this GPA.

GPA Calculation

Grade points are computed by multiplying the points for each grade by the number of semester credit hours; for example, 4.000 (A) x 3 (semester credit hours) = 12 grade points. A student's grade point average (GPA) is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the number of semester credit hours for which a grade other than I, NC, or CR is received.

Impact of Repeated Courses

An undergraduate student is limited to three grade-bearing enrollment attempts for any specific class. With regard to repeats, the grade from the first repeat will substitute for the original grade to determine a student's grade point average and to satisfy degree requirements. A second repeat will result in both repeats being included when computing the student's cumulative grade point average.

Probation and Suspension

Students admitted on probation must earn a GPA of at least 2.200 for the first semester of enrollment. Failure to meet these conditions will result in suspension.

Dean's List

The Dean's List recognizes students whose grades for the fall or spring semester represent the top ten percent of all students within each school who complete 12 or more UT Dallas semester credit hours within that semester. These students will be recognized as members of the Dean's List of their respective schools. Students without a declared major are eligible for the Office of Undergraduate Education Dean's List. Students pursuing a second baccalaureate degree, enrolled as transient and/or non-degree seeking, and graduate students enrolled in undergraduate courses are not eligible for Dean's List.

Credit by Examination

UT Dallas grants credit by examination through programs such as the Advanced Placement Program (AP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and The International Baccalaureate (IB). Students must petition for credit by examination, ideally within their first term at UT Dallas, but no later than the first day of their graduating term. UT Dallas must receive an official score report from the testing agency.

Transfer Credit

The University may accept transfer credit only for academic post-secondary coursework completed with a grade of C (2.000 on a 4.000 -point scale) or higher. Pass/Fail grades are reviewed to determine if they meet the 2.000 threshold. The Office of the Registrar evaluates an applicant's completed file to determine which credits earned at another college or university will transfer to UT Dallas. Coursework that is accepted for transfer credit is applicable toward satisfying requirements for a specific UT Dallas major according to the same criteria as those used for equivalent UT Dallas courses.

Incomplete Grades

A grade of Incomplete ('I') may be given, at the discretion of the instructor of record for a course, when a student is currently passing and, according to the academic calendar for that semester, has completed at least 75% of the course. An incomplete course grade must be completed within the time period specified by the instructor, not to exceed eight weeks from the first day of the subsequent long semester.

Mid-Term Grades

Students are issued mid-term grades to apprise them of their progress within the semester. These grades are not a part of the permanent record and will not appear on academic transcripts.

TSI Requirements

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state mandate that requires students to demonstrate college readiness in English Language Arts Reading and math skills prior to enrolling in college. Students transferring to UT Dallas from private or out-of-state institutions must meet TSI requirements (be tested or exempted) prior to being allowed to enroll in any college-level work.

Academic Advising

UT Dallas values its students and is committed to the success of each and every one. School advisors guide students through an impressive offering of degree plans. These advisors are familiar with the specific departmental emphases and faculty research interests. They help students access and communicate with faculty and instructors. Advisors assist students on issues including class suitability, degree requirements, university policies and procedures, study skills, time management, campus involvement and limited personal issues. Students will learn about required and elective options. Advisors apply credit by examination and transfer credits and assist students in ensuring their degree and graduation requirements are met. Students have access to advisors at any time but should plan to visit with them at least once each semester.
