Connecting the Long Blue Line

Events like the USCGA Alumni Networking Social in San Diego, which recently brought together 75 alumni from classes spanning 1969 to 2025, exemplify the strength of this network. The recent allocation of $380 million to the CGA as a result of the "One Big Beautiful Bill" and Force Design 2028 highlights the impact of this advocacy. These funds will have real impacts. The Alumni Association keeps its members informed about these developments through events like the virtual Lunch and Learn with Mr. Sean Plankey '03, Senior Advisor to the Secretary for the Coast Guard, where he discussed the Coast Guard's operational impacts, future opportunities through historic federal investments, and Force Design 2028.
Giving Back to the Academy and Future Leaders

The Institute for Leadership (IFL), founded in 2005, exemplifies the Academy's commitment to leadership development. The mission of the IFL is to develop leaders of character through research, academic support and engagement with the Corps of Cadets. The IFL's programs, such as the annual Ethics Forum, Spirit of the Bear Award, Tyler Chair Trip and Seminar, and the Youth Leadership Conference, provide cadets with opportunities to hone their leadership skills and explore ethical considerations.
The Coast Guard Academy: A Hub of Activity
Aside from academic, athletic and administrative facilities located within the gates and along the waterfront, the Academy also accommodates a variety of other establishments that support the Coast Guard mission. The CGC Albacore is an 87-foot multi-mission patrol boat that conducts such missions as: search and rescue, naval vessel escorts, recreational boating safety, and fisheries regulations. She serves as a training vessel for cadets at the Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Band was established in 1925 and made the official musical representative of the oldest seagoing service in 1965. Based at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, the USCG Band routinely travels across the country and around the world to great acclaim.
A Look Inside the Coast Guard
LCDR Marguerite Mullen ’11, Mission Support Team Lead at CG Headquarters (CG-83), shared a closer look at her amazing job, where her team manages and directs the Coast Guard’s annual $10B Operations and Support budget.
The Coast Guard appointed three women to enter with the Class of 1980. More appointments for women followed that year with an eventual 38 women accepting and reporting to CGA in June.
