Navigating Your Path: A Comprehensive Guide to UMKC Transfer Requirements
Transferring to a new university can feel like navigating a maze. This guide aims to simplify the process of transferring to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), providing a clear understanding of the requirements and steps involved. UMKC, the largest comprehensive, fully accredited university in the Kansas City area, welcomes students from all backgrounds, with a diverse community representing all 50 states and over 85 countries.
Why Choose UMKC?
UMKC offers a vibrant academic environment with numerous benefits:
- Accessible Faculty: A 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures personalized attention and mentorship opportunities. Faculty members are leaders in their respective fields and are committed to student success.
- Diverse Community: Students from diverse backgrounds enrich the campus community with varied perspectives and experiences.
- Comprehensive Programs: As a comprehensive university, UMKC offers a wide array of programs across various disciplines.
Understanding the Application Process
UMKC aims to make the transfer process as smooth as possible. Here's a breakdown of the key requirements:
Application Fee
- A nonrefundable application fee is required at the time of application. The fee for domestic students is $45, while the fee for international students is $75.
Transcript Requirements
- Official Transcripts: Official transcripts are required from all colleges and universities where coursework was attempted. This includes courses completed and courses in which the student is currently enrolled.
GPA Requirements
- 24 or More Transferable Credit Hours: For students with 24 or more transferable college credit hours, admission decisions are primarily based on their cumulative transfer GPA.
- Minimum GPA: A minimum overall GPA of 2.25 (on a 4.0 scale) in all college-level courses attempted at previous institutions is generally required.
- Less Than 24 Credit Hours: A transferring student who has completed fewer than 24 hours of college-level coursework must apply under the procedures for admission as a freshman and must have at least a 2.25 overall GPA in all college work attempted.
Additional Requirements for Students with Fewer Than 24 Credit Hours
- High School Transcript: Applicants with fewer than 24 college credits must also submit a high school transcript with class rank.
- ACT/SAT Scores: Submission of ACT/SAT scores is also required for students with less than 24 college credits.
GPA Considerations
- Probationary Admission: Transfer students who do not have a 2.25 GPA are welcome to apply for admission; however, admission is not guaranteed and a student may be admitted on a probationary status.
Credit Transfer Policies
UMKC strives to provide maximum credit transferability for students:
- Maximum Transfer Credits: The maximum number of credits that may be transferred is 90.
- University of Missouri System Transfers: Students may transfer among campuses within the University of Missouri System. Any course that leads to an undergraduate degree on any campus of the University of Missouri System is accepted in transfer toward the same degree on each campus of the UM System offering that degree.
- University of Missouri GPA: Any student attempting to transfer between University of Missouri campuses to UMKC should be aware that their cumulative University of Missouri GPA will be used to determine their admissibility.
Cumulative GPA Calculation
- Students will have two cumulative grade-point averages. One is the campus GPA that will be calculated by procedures defined at the campus. The second is the University of Missouri GPA, which will include all grades and credits attempted at any University of Missouri campus, including all grades, credits and points for any courses that are repeated.
Associate's Degree Advantage
- Students who have completed an associate's degree (AA or AS) from an accredited college or university and have a cumulative GPA of 2.25 (on a 4.0 scale) are admissible to the University, but not necessarily to specific programs.

Additional Information
Nursing Program
- Current UMKC and transfer college students interested in UMKC’s Pre-licensure BSN program should schedule a meeting with an academic advisor to review the requirements for application. The UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies Pre-licensure BSN program uses a 1+3 format, which calls for students to complete one year of general education followed by three years of nursing courses with general education courses mixed in. We highly recommend that interested students in BSN programs attend an information session to learn the program specifics. The Accelerated track is specifically for prospective students who already have a bachelor degree. Please visit the ATBSN page to learn more. Information sessions for the Accelerated and Pre-licensure BSN programs are held monthly at the Health Sciences Building.
Admission Pathways
There are several paths to admission that students may take. Whether you’re a recent high school graduate, a college transfer student or an adult learner, there’s a place for everyone at UMKC - and an avenue to get here.
