Program Overview
The UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program is a 6-7 week experience that pairs high school juniors entering their senior year with UCSF faculty on active research projects. This hands-on program provides students with an immersive introduction to biomedical careers through lab work, field trips, and healthcare facility tours. The program aims to provide central San Joaquin Valley high school students an opportunity to gain firsthand experience with careers in medicine and valuable research skills.
Eligibility
Students in their junior year of high school who live in Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, and Tulare counties are eligible to apply.
Program Structure
Selected students will work with faculty members from June through August on research projects in the Fresno area. In addition to conducting research, students visit the University of California, San Francisco campus as well as observe a surgical procedure at Community Regional Medical Center. Last year, 10 students were assigned to research projects such as those addressing cancer, clinical simulation training, diabetes, and scleroderma.
Selection Process
Students are selected based on academic merit, questionnaire responses, interviews, and letters of recommendation from their teachers. Sixty-six students applied to the program in 2015. The application deadline is Feb.
