Navigating UCF Parking: A Comprehensive Guide to Decals, Permits, and Regulations

The University of Central Florida (UCF) has specific parking regulations to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety on its campuses. Understanding these requirements, especially concerning parking decals and permits, is crucial for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This article provides a detailed overview of UCF's parking policies, including permit types, vehicle registration, parking locations, and transportation alternatives.

Virtual Parking Permits: The Key to Campus Access

To park on any UCF campus (Main, Downtown, Health Sciences, Research Park, and Rosen College), a valid parking permit is mandatory. UCF has transitioned to virtual parking permits, eliminating the need for physical decals or hangtags.

Obtaining a Virtual Permit

Newcomers to UCF must register their vehicle and purchase a virtual permit through the official parking portal at parking.ucf.edu. Once the permit is purchased, the vehicle's license plate serves as the parking permit. It is imperative to park nose-in, ensuring the license plate faces the drive lanes for proper scanning.

Duration and Pricing

UCF offers two primary permit durations:

  • 365-Day Permit: Valid for 365 consecutive days from the date of purchase.
  • 150-Day Permit: Valid for 150 consecutive days from the date of purchase.

Pricing for these permits varies based on the type of permit required, such as those for resident students, commuting students, or employees.

Registering Multiple Vehicles

Each account holder can register up to two vehicles, with an additional fee of $15 for the second vehicle. The second vehicle must be owned and registered to the permit holder or within the same household, and its registration will expire on the same date as the first permit.

Important Restrictions

While two vehicles can be registered to an account, only one vehicle is permitted to park on any UCF campus at a time. Account holders can temporarily switch the registered vehicle online if one vehicle is undergoing repairs.

Parking Regulations and Guidelines

Adhering to UCF's parking regulations is essential to avoid citations and ensure campus safety.

Nose-In Parking Policy

Back-in parking is strictly prohibited on all UCF campuses. The correct way to park is nose-in and tail-out, a policy that has been in effect since Summer 2019. This policy facilitates the use of license plate readers (LPRs) for efficient vehicle identification.

Designated Parking Areas

  • Commuting Students: Must purchase a General/Student parking permit and park in designated General/Student lots and garages.
  • Main Campus and Rosen Campus Residents: Must park in designated spaces for their assigned housing community from Monday through Friday between 7:00 am and 5:30 pm. Parking in student or employee spaces during these hours is prohibited.
  • UnionWest Residents: Students residing at UCF Downtown’s UnionWest must lease a parking space from the UnionWest garage, as it is the only overnight-parking option available.

Accessible Parking

Individuals with a valid state-issued disabled placard can park in any available disabled parking space on campus, provided they also possess a UCF parking permit of the appropriate classification (Employee, Student, or Daily Visitor). The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) issues disabled placards, not the university.

Temporary Parking Permits

When parking an unregistered or substitute vehicle on campus, a temporary parking permit must be obtained. These permits are free of charge and grant the same parking privileges as the virtual decal. A temporary permit is valid for a maximum of seven days, and a constituent can obtain no more than six temporary permits per semester.

Restricted Areas

Certain areas on campus are designated as "No Parking" zones to allow emergency, service, and maintenance vehicles to maneuver safely. The absence of "No Parking" signs does not imply that parking is permitted. Loitering inside UCF parking garages or lots is prohibited, as these areas are reserved solely for parking vehicles for academic or university-approved business events.

Alternative Transportation Options

UCF offers various alternative transportation options to facilitate campus navigation and reduce reliance on personal vehicles.

Shuttles

UCF operates several shuttle services, including:

  • Downtown Shuttles: Connect the main and downtown campuses, operating Monday through Thursday with varying hours. Main campus departures occur at the LYNX Transit Center.
  • Grocery Shuttles: Available on Tuesdays, providing transportation to and from grocery stores on both the main and downtown campuses.
  • Health Science Campus (Lake Nona) Shuttles: Run between the main and Lake Nona campuses Monday through Friday.
  • Rosen Campus Shuttles: Connect the main campus and the Rosen campus Monday through Thursday during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Off-Campus Shuttles: Serve select off-campus housing communities, providing residents with transportation to the main campus.
  • Intra Campus Pegasus Express: On-campus shuttles running counterclockwise around the university during the fall and spring semesters.

Riders must present a valid UCF ID to board the shuttles.

LYNX

UCF students and employees can ride all LYNX routes for free with a valid UCF ID, facilitating transportation both on and off campus.

LYMMO

The free LYMMO lines offer convenient transportation around downtown Orlando, with two lines stopping at UCF Downtown.

UCF provides 65 free-to-use bike racks across campus. Students can also utilize SG’s free Bike N’ Gold bike share program. The Bike N’ Gold program operates Monday through Friday, and weekly check-ins at the bike shop are required.

Spin Scooters

Spin scooters are available for navigating the main campus, operating from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm. Scooters are located at charging stations across campus and require downloading the Spin app.

Ride-Sharing Services

SG has partnered with Lyft to offer students discounts on rides within a specific zone around UCF.

Football Gameday Parking

Parking regulations are modified during football game days to accommodate the increased traffic and event attendees.

Gold Zone Parking

Gold Zone parking passes are limited to one pass for every five season tickets purchased. These passes grant access to preferred parking lots and garages in the northeast sector of campus, closest to Acrisure Bounce House. Permits must be displayed at all times.

Accessible Parking

Parking for guests with disabilities is available on the first level of Garage C on a first-come, first-served basis, with a valid DMV permit required. A free shuttle service is provided from Garage C to Acrisure Bounce House (Gate 13).

Campus Parking

Free parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis in most other lots and garages on campus, excluding residential lots and the Libra Garage.

Park and Ride

Park and Ride services are available on all home game days, with shuttles transporting fans from the Research Pavilion to the Research 1 bus loop (adjacent to Parking Garage C).

Shuttle Services

UCF operates student shuttle buses for normally serviced apartment complexes on each home football game day. Additionally, shuttles run from the UCF Downtown and Rosen College campuses to the main campus.

Restrictions

Tailgating is not permitted in any parking garage. Parking is only authorized in designated parking lots and garages. Illegally parked vehicles are subject to towing and fines.
