General UCF Graduate Admissions Requirements

Application Process
Applicants must apply online, and all requested materials must be submitted by the established deadline. The online application process will guide you through submitting letters of recommendation and other required documents. Do not send any application documents to the School of Social Work. All materials must be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies through the online application.
MSW Program Tracks and Requirements
The Master of Social Work Program offers several options to students including full-time study, advanced standing admission, as well as the mixed mode and online classes to support the part-time study. Applicants must choose a track in this program. UCF offers both campus-based and online tracks for the MSW program. All students must adhere to all school policies and to the specific expectations of each track, including field education internships. Application deadlines vary by track. Advanced Standing Track
The minimum qualifying GPA for Advanced Standing is a 3.3 GPA in the last 60 credits. This track is designed for students with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an accredited program awarded within the last six years.

Full-Time/Part-Time Tracks
The minimum qualifying GPA for the full-time/part-time tracks is a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credits. These tracks are for applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an accredited institution and meet the prerequisite course requirements.
Prerequisite Courses
Applicants to the MSW Program can have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline as long as their bachelor’s is from an accredited institution and meet the prerequisite course requirements. Applicants can apply if they have at least three of the four required prerequisite courses completed by the application deadline with proof by transcript. If admitted, you may complete the prerequisite course before your clinical year.
Admission Test
If the GRE or GMAT is required, the specific test will be explicitly stated in the “Admissions Requirements” section of the program.
International Students
Applicants applying to this program who have attended a college/university outside the United States must provide a course-by-course credential evaluation with GPA calculation. They must also provide one official transcript and official certification of degree, with date awarded. International applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to provide proof of English proficiency. A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 91; 7.0 IELTS; or 125 Duolingo is required from a U.S. institution or English instruction institution.
Additional Information
Field Education
Internships are the pedagogy of social work education. Our field education office connects you with an internship to provide you with critical hands-on experience and professional practice hours through supervised generalist and clinical social work. Students must complete at least 50% of their field hours during the agency’s normal business hours. Evening (after 5pm) and weekend placements are extremely limited. The School of Social Work is under no obligation to provide such placements.

Course Structure
Courses are offered in 3-hour blocks of time once a week. There are morning, afternoon, and evening sections available (e.g., 7:30am - 10:20am, 10:30am-1:20pm, 1:30pm-4:20pm, 6:30pm-9:20pm…etc.).
Financial Aid
Fellowships may be available for MSW Campus-based Full-time, 2-year students and School of Social Work scholarships are posted in the spring for current students. The Graduate Catalog lists a fall priority deadline in the application deadlines table which refers to students who wish to be considered for university fellowships or assistantships.
MSW Student Association
The MSW Student Association (MSWSA) is comprised of all admitted MSW students. Officers are selected by students and the MSWSA meetings are held once a month. The Nu Pi Chapter of the Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society was established at UCF in the fall of 2006. The MSW Campus-based Track offers students the opportunity to learn with their peers through interprofessional education program events. Each year, the School of Social Work awards promising MSW Campus-based students with a $10,000 fellowship for tuition and fees for the first-year students in the 2 year full-time track.
Workload
Graduate social work education is both difficult and time consuming; a typical full-time student’s week includes approximately twelve (12) hours in the classroom, twenty-four (24) in outside preparation for classes (readings, assignments, etc.), and approximately fifteen (15) hours of internship. Outside employment adds to an already demanding workload.

Curriculum Overview
The MSW program prepares generalist and advanced clinical social work students to become practitioners who promote optimal well-being, human rights, and social and economic justice. The MSW program strives to educate students to become successful practitioners in the field of clinical social work. To that end, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics is re-enforced throughout the academic curriculum. The curriculum includes the study of conceptual frameworks used to build relationships, interviewing skills and problem-solving skills necessary to work with clients in their environment using a generalist model of practice. Family-focused models of intervention applied to families in transition and to problems such as divorce, single parenting and blended families.
The Role of Social Workers
Helping clients deal with illness and the grief that may follow is part of a social worker’s professional career. Maintaining a sense of hope and compassion throughout that can be difficult. UCF Social Work alumna Erica Sirrine, ‘00 MSW, perfectly balances those needs in her role as the director of social work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At St. Jude, Sirrine leads more than 30 social workers at its Tennessee facility and works directly with clients, while simultaneously strengthening St. Jude as a national and international leader in children’s healthcare social work. Throughout my social work career, I have witnessed some of the greatest love stories filled with extraordinary acts of resilience, compassion and strength.
