Comprehensive Guide to Tutoring Resources for High School Students

For many years, tutoring has been a go-to resource for families seeking extra academic support for their children. The investment in tutoring is substantial; approximately $47 billion was spent on tutoring in the US in 2020. This article explores the landscape of tutoring resources available to high school students, with a particular focus on high-impact tutoring and free or low-cost options.

The Impact of Tutoring: A Research-Based Perspective

Recent research underscores the significant benefits of tutoring, particularly when delivered in a high-dosage format. "High-dosage" refers to frequent sessions with a consistent tutor in small groups, using data to drive instruction. Studies indicate that this approach can lead to substantial academic gains for students. Over 150 randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the positive effects of tutoring across various grade levels and subjects. These effects can range from half a year to over a year of learning within a single academic year of tutoring.

For students from lower-income families, tutoring is a particularly impactful educational intervention. A 2017 study highlighted the effectiveness of tutoring programs in improving educational achievement for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in elementary and middle school.

Understanding High-Impact Tutoring

High-impact tutoring is characterized by several key elements: data-driven instruction, trained tutors, and small group sessions conducted during the school day. Saga Education, a nonprofit leader in this field, emphasizes the importance of human capital and technology in accelerating student outcomes and promoting equitable learning opportunities. Research consistently demonstrates that high-impact tutoring not only improves grades but also fosters student confidence and a sense of belonging.

Standards for High-Impact Tutoring

The Tutoring Quality Standards align with the Accelerator’s Framework for High-Impact Tutoring, and are regularly updated to reflect new learnings. The Tutoring Quality Improvement System includes Self-Assessments and the Badge. The Self-Assessment is a free, automated research-based assessment of a tutoring program.

Free and Low-Cost Tutoring Options

Recognizing the need to provide equitable access to tutoring, several free and low-cost programs have emerged.

The Achievement Tutoring Program

The Achievement Tutoring Program is designed to provide reading, writing, and mathematics tutoring for students in grades K-12. The program is open to any student enrolled in a public or charter school in grades K-12 with an emphasis on those who tested below proficient in reading, writing, or mathematics on the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) and are not eligible for an existing support service the Arizona Department of Education offers. The newly expanded program is open to all students in grades K-12 regardless of their proficiency in reading, writing, and math. ACT Prep for high school students is also offered.

The Achievement Tutoring Program is free to parents and students. District tutors consist of qualified teachers and substitutes. Public school districts or charter schools set up tutoring sessions that can be in-person or online through a user-friendly platform. Tutoring takes place before or after school hours only. Tutoring sessions are held for up to 60 minutes, for a maximum of four days per week, for a total of six weeks. A student can only be tutored in one subject per six-week tutoring block.
