Tri-C Adult Diploma Program: Requirements and Opportunities

Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) offers a comprehensive Adult Diploma Program designed to provide adults in Ohio with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and enhance their career prospects. This program caters to individuals aged 18 and older and offers a pathway to securing a highly respected Ohio-issued high school diploma, along with credentials that can significantly improve employment opportunities.

Accessibility and Locations

Morning and evening classes are held at Tri-C's Eastern, Metropolitan, Western, and Westshore campuses, as well as various other locations throughout Cuyahoga County, making the program accessible to a wide range of students.

Program Overview

The Adult Diploma Program is tailored for students ages 16 and older whose skills are below a 12th-grade level. The program provides job training and an alternate pathway for adults 18 and older to earn an industry-recognized credential aligned with one of Ohio's in-demand jobs. By enrolling at Tri-C, individuals can secure a high school diploma and a credential that will significantly enhance their employment prospects.

Aspire Program

Aspire is designed for adults ages 16 and older whose skills are below a 12th-grade level. Ohio Aspire programs offer no-cost services to individuals preparing for a high school equivalency certificate. By enrolling in an Aspire program, students can build study and test-taking skills and take practice exams to prepare for the high school equivalency test. This Ohio Aspire program provides no-cost services to individuals taking English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes.

Educational Opportunity Center (EOC)

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is a federally funded TRIO program that offers free enrollment assistance to more than 1,200 Cuyahoga County adults annually. The program is open to individuals ages 19 and over who wish to further their education. EOC also provides referrals to social services and community resources, connecting students with the support they need to succeed.

Women in Transition (WIT) Program

The Women in Transition (WIT) program is a noncredit course available at no cost to the participant. The curriculum is designed to help women at a time of transition move their lives forward as they create personalized plans focused on academic, personal, and professional development. The multi-week, day, and evening classes are available and offered on-site or virtually. Preregistration is required. The WIT program is funded by Tri-C, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, the Westfield Insurance Foundation, and the S.K. Wellman Foundation.

Admissions Information

Admission to Tri-C is open to all high school graduates, anyone with documentation of successful GED completion, non-high school graduates participating in dual enrollment programs, and those 18 years of age or older.

General Admissions Procedure

Tri-C's general admissions procedure does not ensure admission to a particular course or program. Some courses are exclusive to students in a particular major. Additionally, admission to a specific program may be competitive or require specific minimum qualifications. Prospective students are encouraged to begin the admissions process well ahead of the start of the semester/term. Please note that student records are deactivated after three consecutive semesters without registration activity.

Residency and Tuition

Tri-C is supported by Cuyahoga County taxpayers and the state of Ohio. Accordingly, students who reside outside of Cuyahoga County or Ohio pay out-of-county or out-of-state tuition rates. It is important for students to understand that a change to a Cuyahoga County address does not automatically result in a change to in-county residency for tuition purposes. Students are responsible for initiating a change of residency status by submitting a Petition for Change of Residency Status and providing supporting documentation to the Admissions and Financial Services office. citizens (and those with a permanent resident card) between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with Selective Service to qualify for in-county or in-state tuition rates. The admission application requires a Selective Service registration number or reason for exemption. In accordance with the Defense Department Authorization Act (Pub. L. 97-252) and Ohio Revised Code §3345.32, any student who is required to register with the Selective Service and fails to do so will be ineligible for federal and Ohio student financial aid funds.

Social Security Number (SSN) Requirement

All students must provide Tri-C with their Social Security number (SSN). Tri-C is concerned about and aware of privacy issues regarding SSNs.

International Students

immigration laws have a variety of requirements regarding college enrollment. If you have or will be applying for F-1 nonimmigrant student status, you must consult with a Global and International Student Services coordinator before applying and registering for classes. F-1 applicants are not permitted to apply for admission online. F-1 students with a Form I-20 from Tri-C must complete a minimum of 12 credits per semester in order to maintain status. Nine of the 12 credits must be taken as traditional seat-based (in-person) or blended learning (in-person/online) classes; the remaining three credits may be taken via distance learning, which includes online, independent learning, and cable college. Students enrolled in an English as a Second Language program must complete all of their coursework in person.

Visiting/Transient Students

If a student is attending another college or university and would like to take classes that will transfer back to their home institution, they can apply as a visiting or transient student at Tri-C.

The desired outcome of this initiative is to strengthen connections between Tri-C and the faith-based community. Similar programs at other colleges have recognized that individuals who receive critical information about education and jobs in a familiar location from someone they know are more likely to enroll and finish high school/GED, college, or workforce programs.
