Touro University California: A Focus on Health Professions

Touro University California, established in 1997, is a private graduate school primarily focused on health professions. Originally located in San Francisco, the university relocated to Mare Island in Vallejo, California. Touro University California confers degrees in graduate studies of various disciplines including education, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, nursing, and public health.

History and Location

Touro University California was established in San Francisco in 1997 with an inaugural class of 67 students. In 1999, the university relocated to Mare Island in Vallejo, restoring two naval quarters buildings originally built in the 1930s. The university also had the lease option to renovate ten other buildings intended to become diagnostic and research laboratories.

Accounting Programs

Touro University offers accounting programs for both men and women in a Jewish environment. These programs include:

  • Men's College:
    • Length of Program: 120 credits non-CPA / 150 credits CPA track
    • Available Class Time: Beis Medrash in the morning, college classes in the late afternoon and evening.
    • Notes: Core curriculum with a strong Judaic studies component.
  • Women's College (LCW):
    • Length of Program: 150 credits are needed for the CPA track. 120 credits for the managerial accounting track (non-CPA)
    • Available Class Time: Daytime
    • Notes: Judaic Studies requirement. Students pursuing the CPA track must maintain a 3.0 GPA in accounting courses and a 2.5 GPA overall. Students who do not fulfill these prerequisites are eligible to qualify for a B.S. in Business Management with a concentration in Accounting.
  • Men's Program:
    • Length of Program: 150 or 120 credits
    • Available Class Time: Mondays & Wednesdays, in the evening.
    • Notes: If majoring in accounting in order to become a CPA, the CPA exam requires 150 credits. There is an accelerated track available to complete the 150 credits in less than 2 years. For those not looking to take the CPA exam, there is the managerial accounting degree that is 120 credits.
  • Women's Program:
    • Length of Program: 150 or 120 credits
    • Available Class Time: Tuesdays & Thursday, in the afternoon and evening.
