Applying for the Sara Scholarship involves several important steps, including completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), submitting the scholarship application, and providing necessary documentation.

FAFSA Completion

To determine eligibility for student aid, applicants must complete the FAFSA through the Department of Education. It is extremely important to do this as soon as possible, as the application takes time to process and deadlines vary from state to state. Once your application is processed, the Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) detailing your eligibility for aid.

Scholarship Application and Essays

ONE letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, counselor or administrator such as a principal is required. As an alternative, a letter of recommendation from a local business or professional person is acceptable.

Merit-Based Scholarships

The Archbishop John J. Swint Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship based upon a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.75 and either a composite ACT score of 26 or a combined SAT score of 1240 - renewable for four years if the student maintains the applicable academic requirements.

The Bishop Mark E. Brennan Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship based upon a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.25 and either a composite ACT score of 22 or a combined SAT score of 1100 - renewable for four years if the student maintains the applicable academic requirements.

The Presidential Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship based upon a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.75 and either a composite ACT score of 18 or a combined SAT score of 960 - renewable for four years if the student maintains the applicable academic requirements.

The Sara Tracy Scholarship is awarded based upon the student’s potential to thrive and succeed at the university.

Athletic Grants

Athletic awards are offered by the athletic coach based upon the eligibility and talent of the student athlete.

Teens to Trails: Sara's Scholarship for Outdoor Experiences

In addition to the college scholarship, there's another scholarship opportunity in Sara's name. Sara’s Scholarship, offered by Teens to Trails, is an investment in a teen’s connection to the outdoors. This award provides 7th - 10th grade students with the opportunity to participate in an immersive outdoor experience that sparks personal growth and a sense of belonging in the natural world.

Eligibility for Outdoor Experience Scholarship

Any current 7th through 10th grade student at a Maine school is eligible. Experiences must be completed before the start of the next academic year, assumed to be September.

Application Details

Applications open January 16 and are due March 7, 2026. Award Announcements: Late-March.

Scholarship Details

Teens to Trails will award 5 scholarships to 9th and 10th grade students and 1 scholarship to a 7th, 8th, or 9th grade student. Experiences are provided by Rippleffect, Chewonki, Trout Unlimited, and Apogee Adventures.

Reporting Requirements

Recipients of Sara’s Scholarship are asked to share a written and illustrated story of their experiences by August 31. Teens to Trails has the right to use these reports to promote the scholarship.

Sara’s Story: The Inspiration Behind Teens to Trails

In 2005, Carol & Bob Leone tragically lost their 15-year-old daughter, Sara, in a car accident. To honor Sara’s memory, her love of the outdoors, and to offer a way for students of Sara’s age to have access to outdoor experiences, they founded Teens to Trails. Sara's love of the outdoors played a key role in the person she had become. From her many outdoor experiences, she grew comfortable with herself and her place in the world.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

Teens to Trails deeply values diversity. They honor the differences among us and believe that we all belong outdoors. When we make the benefits of outdoor experiences accessible to everyone, everywhere we build stronger connections and communities. No prior experience is required. They will help provide all necessary clothing, gear, and equipment.
